The 2 hectare Clos de la Justice is a monopole and interesting in that it is completely enclosed by walls within the very much larger lieu-dit of La Justice – found on the eastern side of the N74. For many years the label bore only the name Clos de la Justice – no mention of Gevrey – partly after AOC, and completely following the second world war were labelling conventions respected.
The Vallet family, owners of Pierre Bouree, purchased the vineyard in 1901. At the time it was not planted at all. So Louis Vallet planted the two hectares and since it was surrounded by walls he decided to call it Clos de la Justice.
The soil here is poor, not particularly deep and full of stones (ideal for vines). The walls even out the temperature; during the day they absorb a bit of the heat, which they then release overnight, says Bernard Vallet. Today the vines are over 60 years of age.
