The climat's lower slope geology and close proximity to the river Serein means that its relatively deep Kimmeridgian soil contains a high proportion of clay. This calcareous soil is richer than in the other Grand Cru vineyards, retaining water more efficiently and lending a rounder, fuller weight to Bougros wines. However, this is tempered by the cool north Burgundy climate, and this ripeness rarely comes at the expense of acidity: Bougros wines remain balanced, with a characteristically intense minerality.
