Darren Harris: Wow! Deep and dark. The spicy fruits leap from the glass. It’s all happening here! Dark cherry, dark chocolate, more of the Cheron florals. Dense and creamy from the old vines. A little new oak. It is powerful, almost brooding with masses of potential. This shows just what Charmes-Chambertin can deliver in the right hands.
From a cooler site because there is a good underground water supply, part of the domaine since 2013. Solid dense dark purple in colour. Sweetly ripe, powerful but not overcooked, the richness of the fruit covering the acidity in this wine. This wine I leave to itself to vinify
Cask sample. Deepish cherry red. Open and a touch floral, becoming more red-fruited and intense with aeration. But there's also a darker and more brooding side. On the palate, firm, chewy and mouth-filling, though it is the scent more than the weight that fills the mouth. The tannins are chewy, youthful yet there are no edges. Beautifully structured and persistent.
Deeper and richer than anything else in this portfolio, this is an impactful wine but it is not particularly graceful nor is it layered enough for me. Big and bold, yes, but sophisticated and charming.
