Burghound

A strikingly perfumed, cool and layered nose is comprised by notes of the essence of red currant, sandalwood and an interesting hint of orange pekoe tea. The super-sleek and silky though still quite punchy middleweight flavors possess even better refinement along with evident minerality that adds a sense of lift to the focused, detailed and sneaky long finale. This is pretty much textbook Carelle. 2028+. 91-93 Points

Six barrels, which is respectable in 2021. A fresh lighter purple with quite a floral nose, plus raspberries. More precision. Delicious in fact, a mix of juicy raspberry and cherry fruit, without the peppery finish, picked ripe enough and healthy enough. Medium plus persistence. Drink from 2026-2032. 90-92 Points

Some wines have aromatics that are immediately recalled if one has tasted the wine previously. Carelle sous la Chapelle from Domaine Buffet is one of those. Bright, medium, garnet red. The nose is floral, full of red cherry, wild strawberry, cranberry and ground spice. There are anise, bay leaf and fresh forest notes in the background. It is very aromatic. On the palate the wine is medium weight with sweet fruit on the mid palate and a creamy old vines texture. The finish is mineral, almost saline, with vibrant acidity and just the right amount of tannin. Svelte ands tight, this is a Volnay for lovers of stylish old school Burgundy.
