The wine estate “Domaine de la Solitude” belongs to one of the oldest families of Châteauneuf-du-Pape with roots going back to the 15th century. In the 17th century, Hélène Barberini, a descendant of the illustrious Tuscan family of the same name, married Claude Martin, owner of a vineyard in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Their grandson would give a huge boost to “La Solitude” by creating the first label for the appellation. Thus, “le Vin de la Solitude” became a symbol of quality and began to be exported, allowing a great terroir to come into its own. Eight generations later the estate is still a family affair and is now run by Florent Lancon.

This historic Cuvee Tradition, produced since the 17th century, is a blend of different terroirs ranging from safres to the huge rounded river pebbles. The terroirs of safres give it finesse and elegance, while the soil with rounded pebbles bring power and structure. It is a blend of 3 major varietals: Grenache noir, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, but also of all the 13 varietals authorised by the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC, in smaller proportions.

Wine Spectator

Warm and lush, with dark plum, blackberry and raspberry compote flavors rolling through, wrapped in black licorice notes and carried by a light tarry edge on the finish. Enjoyable up front, but has the stuffing for cellaring. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Drink now through 2035.

Wine Enthusiast

Whiffs of dried strawberry and cherry mingle into darker notes of smoke and spice in this perfumed blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. A luscious, voluminous sip, it floods the palate with primary cherry and raspberry flavors but also a crush of minerals, too. This readily approachable wine with fine, silky tannins should gain earthier complexities through 2030. #6 in The Wine Enthusiast's Top 100 2020

Vinous - Josh Raynolds

(vinified in tronconic oak casks and aged for 18 months in new and used barriques ) Vivid magenta. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe red and blue fruits, potpourri and incense, along with smoky mineral and floral topnotes. Sweet, seamless and penetrating on the palate, offering concentrated yet energetic raspberry, boysenberry, licorice and spicecake flavors that show excellent delineation and back-end lift. A strikingly long, floral-tinged finish is framed by fine-grained, even tannins that come in late. (Drink between 2025-2035)
