Montmains is on limestone soils from the Upper Jurassic Kimmeridgian era, very rich in marine fossils and in particular in Exogyra virgula, a small oyster typical of Chablis soils. It occupies one of the hillsides on the left bank of the Serein with a south-east exposure.
In bottle (just a small lot – most to follow later). A stainless steel cuvée. Pale in colour, the bouquet is quite restrained. Just a few stones coming out. The palate is much cooler and the reductive element clearly comes through. Excellent persistence. Drink from 2026-2032. 92 Points
Ripe lemon, green apple, white peach, some dried flowers, a slight almond character, with just a little wooly sulphur showing. There’s a good volume of fruit, but it keeps itself pretty tight, has something of a cool mint/aniseed character, some stony/chalky grip, and a honey lemon finish of excellent length. Slightly spicy too. Very nice. Touch and go for 94 points really. 93 Points
