The Clos du Fonteny is a small walled vineyard upslope (295 metres above sea level) within the larger Fonteny climat. Vines were planted in 1972 and 1987 on limestone soil. The wine is powerful yet elegant. Jasper Morris says “This is one of the most interesting Gevrey premiers crus.” We consumed a bottle of the 2019 recently. It was brilliant: Gevrey-Chambertin with Vosne-Romanee class and spice.

Decanter - Charles Curtis MW

Although this took a long time to come around in the 2021 vintage, according to Bruno, it is at this point a lovely, expressive wine. Somewhat on the lighter side with a nose of bright cherry fruit and mineral notes, the wine is structured and fresh on the palate with good length. It is produced from the Clair monopole of the Clos de Fonteny just north of Mazis-Chambertin. The fermentation was done with a healthy inclusion of whole clusters and is ageing at present in cask (30% new). (Drink between 2025-2045). 93 Points
