While Chateau Caillou enjoys a long history in the Sauternes appellation, the modern era for the property begins in 1909 when the estate was purchased by the Ballan family. After more than a century the state is still in the same family.

Chateau Caillou was part of the original 1855 Classification. In fact, it was so well thought of at the time, it received the classification Premiere Cru Classe.

The 12.9 hectare Sauternes vineyard of Chateau Caillou is planted to 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. The terroir of this property is a combination of gravel, clay and limestone soils with large stones, which is where the estate takes its name from. The vines are close to 40 years of age.

Sauternes are almost indestructible and age for decades. This has to be the perfect birthday wine for anyone born in 1981!
