11 Consecutive Vintages of One Grand Cru!
Our relationship with Jerome Castagnier began with the 2011 vintage.
Growing up in Morey-Saint-Denis becoming a winegrower and taking on the family domaine was not the obvious choice for Jérôme Castagnier. Instead he picked up the trumpet and chose a career in music. After studies at the Conservatory in Dijon and the Conservatory in Paris he landed a job in the French Republican Guard Band, working at the Élysée Palace under both Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy.
In 2004, at the age of 26, he felt it was time to decide whether to continue the career in music or to uphold the family tradition. He chose the latter and returned to Morey-Saint-Denis and attended wine school in Beaune. He became the fifth generation of his family running the domaine.
Jerome says "And I’m very happy today. My first real vintage was 2005. That’s the only vintage at Domaine Castagnier where three generations worked together. It was my grandfather's last vintage, my father's 30th and my first."
Since then Jerome has received Burgundy's Young Winemaker of the Year and the quality has skyrocketed. The English critics have cottoned on too and the wines receive exceptional reviews.
Over the last decade or so we have managed to hide a few wines away for special events.
We have decided it is time to take a look at the development of Domaine Castagnier and have chosen Jerome's classic Clos St-Denis Grand Cru to showcase.
We have all 9 vintages from the first we imported - 2011 - up to the latest vintage - 2019.
We will start with a bracket of Puligny-Montrachet Premier Crus from two exceptional vineyards - Les Pucelles and Les Caillerets. We think you will be surprised at Jerome's white wine making skills. They are killer wines!
The dinner will be in the new private room at Bar Rosella. Four courses will accompany the wines.
