Burgundy, it’s all about terroir 

It is quite incredible how parcels of land mere metres apart produce wines with vastly different characteristics. It can be complex but it is also fascinating.

At this dinner we will explore the terroir of 4 Burgundy villages. The only way to do this properly is to keep everything constant except for the climat.

So we have selected 4 fine producers and chosen 3 Premier Crus from each to compare. All wines are from the new 2018 vintage.

After a lovely white from St-Aubin we will launch into the first bracket of 3.

The Girardin family have been vintners since the beginning of the 19th century. Today, the domaine is run by Justin who took over from his father Jacques (who is the brother of Vincent Girardin) four years ago. The domaine own 17 hectares of vines, including the three Santenay Premier Crus we will taste. The vineyards are evenly spaced from east to west. 

The Vaudoisey family came to Volnay in 1804. In recent years it is Christophe, the eighth generation, who has taken the domaine to new levels. The domaine owns three Volnay Premier Crus and these are also spread across the commune. Clos des Chenes is considered my many to be Volnay’s finest vineyard with plenty of power. Les Caillerets, with its limestone soil, and Les Mitans, located closer to Pommard, might surprise. What will you think on the night? 

If there is one family-owned domaine with great vineyard holdings in Beaune it is Albert Morot. Though small, Morot have seven Premier Cru reds. We have chosen three to illustrate terroir. Les Cent-Vignes and Les Bressandes are right next to each other. How similar will they be?

Our final bracket of three comes from Nuits-St-Georges. Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux are the newest producer at this dinner. The domaine was founded in 1887. Nuits-St-Georges has some distinct sections. The vineyards to the north - of which the tiny (0.73 hectares) Aux Champs Perdrix is one - have a lot in common with their neighbours across the border in Vosne-Romanee. The vineyards south of the town have more structure and richness and less spicy aromatics. Les Porets, grown on gravelly soil, often has liquorice notes. Then we come to Les St Georges. This is Nuits-St-Georges finest vineyard. it has applied for elevation to Grand Cru status. There is more clay in the soil here and the wine typically combines power with a sleek and complex palate. 

If you would like to learn more about the intricacies of Burgundy this will be a great dinner. You will also get to drink some excellent wines.
