2016 versus 2017

Can you tell the difference?

Most of us fell in love with the 2016 Burgundies. They are simply gorgeous wines.

Then along came 2017. Many of the critics were not quite as impressed. Perhaps the wines were not obvious enough? I have to agree that the wines are less immediately seductive. They are what one might call "classic". They do, however scream of their terroir. Over the last few months I have tasted most of the 2017's that have arrived. I have done that with customers and friends and the one comment that is consistent is how fine and pure the wines are.

I have seen some very good palates confuse the vintages and clearly prefer 2017 to 2016. This is Burgundy, it's never too easy. And the 2017's are very good - much better than many of the critics will have you believe.

The theme of this dinner was suggested by some of those very clients. Why don't we compare 2017 and 2016 of the same wine and form our own opinion.

I have selected 6 wines from 6 communes and 6 producers. We'll compare the 2016 with the 2017. To make it fair we will do that blind. Let's see how easy it is!

This is a great opportunity to hone your palate and taste some serious wines. Ten of the twelve wines are Premier Crus - the other pair is from a vineyard many consider could easily be. There will do doubt be some serious discussion before the vintages are revealed.
