A lovely range of wines from the delightful 2016 vintage

Jerome Castagnier is one of the most interesting producers in our portfolio. Originally a professional trumpet player with the Guard Republicain, the national band of France, Jerome took over the family domaine just over a decade ago. Armed with a raft of great vineyards he has turned Domaine Castagnier into a rising star. Even so, the domaine deserves even more attention than it currently receives.

A few years ago he was awarded Young Winemaker of the Year. Always smiling and with a super sense of humour, Jerome found this quite amusing as he felt he was a little too old to be Young Winemaker. Never-the-less it further confirmed his status in Burgundy.

It has been three years since we have presented a Castagnier Wine Dinner. We have a small reserve of back vintages and I thought it would be opportune to present a selection of wines from Bourgogne to Grand Cru. Most attendees found our recent Chevillon-Chezeaux Dinner informative as it presented the same wine over a variety of vintages. We don't have the depth of back vintages from Castagnier but we do have some nice little verticals to explore as part of this dinner.
So we will start with Jerome’s Puligny-Montrachet blanc then move into a bracket featuring the delicious Bourgogne and three Villages wines. The Villages wines have a vintage/vineyard comparision that should be interesting.
The we will taste two brackets of Premier Cru Reds. The first bracket features three consecutive vintages of Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru Aux Cheseaux. As with Echezeaux in Flagey the origin of this vineyard name is from the ancient word for buildings. The vineyard lies right on the Gevrey border and part adjoins the Grand Cru Mazoyeres-Chambertin. it is a small vineyard of 1.49 hectares.
The second Premier Cru bracket is Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers. This is one of Gevrey’s best Premier Crus. It is located in the Combe de Lavaux alongside Clos St-Jacques. It is steep, stony and exposed due east. The resulting wines are elegant, precise and complex. Once again we have three consecutive vintages.
And to finish a bracket of Grand Crus seems the right thing to do. We have two wines from the great 2015 vintage and the 2012 Charmes-Chambertin, produced from a small parcel of very old vines.
Following the support for the last dinner at Yagiz we will return there for this dinner.
The wine list:
Puligny-Montrachet 2015

It has been three years since we have presented a Castagnier Wine Dinner. With the gorgeous new 2016's due very soon I thought it would be a great opportunity to showcase Jerome's wines again.

We'll start with a pair of Whites from Puligny-Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne. Then we'll progress from Coteaux Bourguignons up to 4 red Grand Crus with numerous stops along the way.

There are 5 Grand Crus in this dinner and I don't need to emphasize that this is a very good opportunity to savour wines that are becoming increasingly expensive.

We only have 12 seats for this dinner so if you'd like to book in and taste these wines over a lovely dinner at Ocha please do so quickly.
