Like Corton, a wind of change is sweeping through Nuits-St-Georges. Whilst retaining the commune's character numerous makers are producing wines with more finesse and greater drinkability. One of those makes is Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux.
Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux is an 8.61 hectare estate in Nuits-St-Georges. They own 14 different appellations but the jewels in the crown are their five 1er Cru Reds including Les St-Georges.
The husband and wife are well connected - Claire is a cousin of the owners of Domaine Robert Chevillon and Philippe is the brother of Jerome from Domaine Jerome Chezeaux who is also in our portfolio.
It was tremendous to see their 2011's receive brilliant reviews in Bourgogne Aujourd'Hui (Burgundy Today) recently.
Our shipment of 2011's is about to arrive. We have imported all 5 Premier Crus with special emphasis on Les Saint-Georges, the jewel in the crown.
We are down to our last 10 cases of this very impressive wine. However, stocks of the other cuvees are now critical.
Here is what is left....
120 bottles 1er Cru Les St-Georges
23 bottles 1er Cru Les Bousselots
11 bottles 1er Cru Les Porets
10 bottles 1er Cru Les Crots
4 bottles 1er Cru Aux Champs Perdrix
Having now tasted around four hundred 2011 red Burgundies I think Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux has produced some of the best and most stylish wines of the vintage.
With Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les St-Georges applying for promotion to Grand Cru status there is considerable interest in the commune. Les St-Georges has long been considered one of the likely candidates based on quality and the feeling that Nuits-St-Georges is somewhat hard done by with no Grand Crus. You can read an article in Decanter Magazine here.
Quality is one thing but price also needs to be attractive and the domaine is very reasonable.
Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les St-Georges 2011
Pre Arrival Price $104.50
From a 0.45 hectare holding planted in 1947.
Beautiful vibrant colour. Deeper and more profound than the four previous wines. Spice, an amalgam of fruits, earth, violets. Plenty of extract and a rich, creamy texture from the old vines. Long and serious, but not heavy and rustic like wines of the past.
A serious Nuits-St-Georges of the modern style. The terroir clear and precise. Classy and complex and worthy of Grand Cru status.
Compare this to other Les St-Georges in the market. This is a bargain!
I can honestly say these wines are amongst the most interesting 2011 Burgundies I have tasted. In fact I have tasted some great Nuits-St-Georges from the vintage.
Click here to view tasting notes for all of the wines (you'll also see the 2012's available Pre Arrival - the will be shipped later this year).
