A remarkable White Burgundy for less than the price of most generic Bourgogne
Santenay is the most southerly of the major towns of the Cote d'Or. It is a major source for both red and white wines, which can deliver plenty of bang for your buck.
We're pretty chuffed to see another of our discoveries pick up a prestigious award at the Concours des Burgondia in Beaune.
The Girardin family have been vintners since the beginning of the 19th century. Today, the domaine is run by Jacques (who is the brother of Vincent Girardin), his wife Valerie and their son Justin. The domaine own 17 hectares of vines, mostly in Santenay and Savigny-Les-Beaune.
Their Gold Medal winning wine is the Santenay Les Terrasses de Bievaux Blanc 2012.
Santenay Les Terrasses de Bievaux Blanc
Pre Arrival $41.50
Case of 12 Bottles $469.90 (=$39.16 a bottle)
The vines for Bievaux Blanc are planted on terraces and the steep slopes of Santenay (around 20% gradient) to provide better exposure. Girardin's plots are situated above the Premier Cru La Maladiere, where Jasper Morris says some of Santenay's most stylish wines are produced. The vineyards are high, at between 330 and 390 metres above sea level.
Vine age is around 25 years and the grapes are fermented at low temperature and bottled after fining and light filtration.
Les Terrasses de Bievaux 2012 is fresh and vibrant with citrus and white flower notes and a fine, mineral finish.
