Chambolle-Musigny is one of the most popular communes for lovers of Red Burgundy. The attraction is the aromatic, silky wines with lots of feminine style that most domaines produce. The wines are complex and layered and one would say more delicious than the wines of Gevrey-Chambertin just up the road.
Domaine Sigaut produce archetypical Chambolle-Musigny from a fine portfolio of Premier Cru vineyards. Their style is never masculine or heavy - it is always supple and mouth-filling with mineral notes adding another dimension. The 2011 vintage is no exception.
I tasted the wines at the domaine in June last year. This was over five months after Burghound's visit and my notes are quite different from the unfinished wines he tasted.
The 2011 wines from Domaine Sigaut are very good. If you are familiar with the house style I can tell you these are very typical. Vinification was carried out with a light hand and the wines have been bottled unfined and unfiltered.
My two favourites from 2011 are:
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers Vieille Vignes 2011
Normal Price $133.00
Pre Arrival Price $113.00
Planted in 1947. A powerful nose of complex red fruits; raspberry and currants, a note of violet and minerals. A little toasty oak. Pure and refined with excellent palate weight. All the time retaining a sense of balance and structure. Sentiers is located immediately below Bonnes-Mares and frequently reminds me of a mini version. 2011 is no exception. One of the best wines in 2011.
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuees 2011
Normal Price $124.00
Pre Arrival Price $105.00
30% new oak. Deep red-black colour. A melange of red and black fruits with a distinct mineral character. Very fresh and not obviously 2011 - one could think 2010. The wine has a a firm spine and some fine grained tannins to finish. Very good indeed.
