Chateau Gris - A Special Introductory Offer for this interesting new addition to our Portfolio

Gris Header

A very small domaine producing just two wines from high, terraced limestone-rich vineyards in Nuits-St-Georges

Chateau Gris was constructed in 1802 in the middle of its 3.5 hectare vineyard in Nuits-St-Georges. After the vines were destroyed by phylloxera in the late 19th century the chateau was renovated and instead of the usual coloured Burgundian tiles the roof was covered in grey slate. The locals began to refer to the building as Chateau Gris (the grey castle) and the name stuck.

Two wines are produced from the chateau's high, terraced vineyards. At the top of the property is a 0.70 ha parcel of Chardonnay. The name of the lieu-dit is Les Terrasses. The domaine also produces around 6000 bottles of the unique Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Chateau Gris Monopole red from 2.80 ha of pinot noir vines.

You can download a brochure in PDF format to read more about the domaine by clicking here.

The high altitude (280 metres), steep slopes facing due east and clay-limestone soil make for extremely elegant and fresh expressions of Nuits-St-Georges.

In addition to the current 2011 vintage the domaine has generously made available a selection of wines from back vintages including 2005, 2009 and 2010 including a number of magnums. These are rare and special wines.

Domaine du Chateau Gris Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Chateau Gris Rouge Monopole
Gris Monopole Label The red wine of the domaine is grown on 2.8 ha of terraced vines surrounding the chateau. Part of Les Crots, the monopole Chateau Gris is the highest 1er Cru vineyard in Nuits-St-Georges. The drainage off the high limestone soil makes for an extremely fresh, focused and mineral Nuits-St-Georges as frequently noted by Burghound.
Domaine du Chateau Gris Nuits-St-Georges Les Terrasses Blanc
Gris Terrasses Label The white vineyard is just 0.70 ha in size. Chardonnay makes up just 2% of the production of Nuits-St-Georges making this a most unusual and rare wine. Fresh, citric, vibrant and stylish are words used to describe Les Terrasses.

It has been interesting to watch the growing interest in Nuits-St-Georges. The commune produces quite a variety of styles from the powerful, tannic wines of the southern vineyards to the aromatic, more supple wines from near the Vosne-Romanee border.

With Les St-Georges applying for elevation to Grand Cru status this is certainly a part of Burgundy to watch.

We have over 70 different Nuits wines available including some magnificent and very affordable wines from Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux.
