There are very few domaines in Burgundy with reserve stocks of very old wines. Even fewer have ancient bottles that they are prepared to sell.
Doudet-Naudin made their reputation cellaring bottles for later release primarily to restaurants in France.
The story of this cellar would make a fascinating movie. During World War II the old cellar was walled up to prevent the most prized bottles being stolen by the occupying German forces.
It was not until 1955 that the wall was broken open to reveal the treasures. You can see some photos of the operation here.
We have offered some ancient bottles from this domaine previously and they have been very popular. I have served them at dinners where they have been greatly appreciated. Alas, all good things come to an end and domaine is vitually out of great old bottles from legendary years.
Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 1929

Pre Arrival Price $995.00
Michael Broadbent: 5 Star Vintage.
1929 is one of the great vintages of the 20th century. Both Burgundy and Bordeaux produced legendary wines that have aged magnificently.
These bottles have come straight from the domaine's cellars where they are cleaned, checked, recorked and labeled before shipping.
Clos Vougeot, with all its power and structure, needs decades to hits its straps and this wine, at 84 years of age, has arrived! The nose is a complex melange of plums, sous bois and a touch of earth. In the glass the wine blossoms to show sweet fruit which is rich yet elegant, but always underpinned by the structure Clos Vougeot provides (which has enabled this wine to age so long). Deeply flavoured with serious concentration. A classic example of an ancient wine that had aged unmoved in the dark, damp cellars of the domaine.
We have purchased the remaining bottles of this wine from the domaine. If you love old wine, or have always wanted to taste a great old bottle, this is a not-to-be-missed opportunity. For a domaine-aged bottle, well on its way to a century old, this price is very reasonable - in fact, our price is cheaper than you can buy the same wine for in Burgundy! TREAT YOURSELF!
