As the 2011 vintage arrives in force and offers for 2012 start to appear we again think about the 2010 vintage. I do not recall a year in my drinking life that both reds and whites have been so equally magnificent.
Critics including Burghound have reflected on the 2010 wines and I think it is fair to say they are even more impressed than they were when the wines were tasted from barrel.
A few recent quotes from Burghound on the reds include:
"My in-bottle tastings of the 2010 vintage have served to confirm that it's a stunning vintage."
"The 2010s are absolutely classic in every respect and should provide for superb drinking in due time. More importantly, at least if you believe as I do that a good burgundy's duty first and foremost is to accurately reflect its origins, the 2010 vintage delivers this terroir attribute in spades."
"In sum, should you find attractively priced 2010s on the market, I wouldn't hesitate to acquire them as the better wines will
make for excellent cellar candidates."
And on the whites:
"My in-bottle tastings of the 2010s have largely confirmed what I tasted from barrel last year. Normally this might sound like faint praise but given that I was extremely positive about the quality of the 2010s, this is actually a strong confirmation that indeed the vintage is extraordinarily good."
"2010 should more than amply reward longer-term cellaring as it has everything it needs for greatness. Moreover, as I commented last year in Issue 47, the vintage is terrific from the bottom to the top of the appellation hierarchy as well as from virtually every commune. Puligny remains my choice as the best of the best but it's hard to go too far wrong as 2010 is a magnificent white burgundy vintage."
Our stocks of 2010 are diminishing rapidly. With the decline in the value of the Dollar and price increases ex-cellar, these outstanding wines represent unbelievable value as they are cheaper than 2011 and 2012.
Now is the time to make sure you have sufficient 2010's in your cellar to last you a decade or more. Stocks of many wines are down to single digit quantities, and of course no further bottles are available.
