I am always delighted (perhaps even a little smug) when one of my discoveries is finally recognized by the main-stream wine press. Domaine Berthelemot's tremendous success in the Decanter World Wine Awards 2013 will ensure many wine lovers will have the opportunity to appreciate the high quality, fair priced Burgundies the domaine produces. The domaine is still tiny by Burgundy standards. Despite a string of small vintages the domaine has exhibited great foresight in expanding and improving their vineyard holdings. Out with some excess Beaune and Hautes Cotes and in with Villages and 1er Cru Puligny-Montrachet, 1er Cru Chassagne-Montrachet whites and Santenay 1er Cru red. And not just any old vineyards but some of the best and most interesting of the communes, more often than not with very old vines. That is a serious investment!
2012 will be the debut year for four great new wines.
We have received our offer for the 2012 vintage. As you will have read this is another very successful vintage in Burgundy, but it is also very small. The Hospices de Beaune auction in November each year is a good barometer of the new vintage. The 2012 auction saw an average price increase of 54% over 2011!
Fortunately Domaine Berthelemot have not employed this model. The domaine has increased prices a little and we have a soft Australian Dollar to contend with but the wines are still exceptional value.
Our 2012 offer features 12 wines. I tasted all bar one from barrel in June 2013. Many were still undergoing malolactic fermentation, others had recently finished. It was not the easiest time to taste but the sterling quality of the vintage and domaine shone through. You will find my brief notes with each wine on our website (I did expect that I would have the opportunity to taste the finished wines before I buy but recent success means this will not happen).
The quantity produced of many wines is very small - often just a barrel or two. If you wish to secure some of these wines I suggest you act quickly.
You will find all 12 wines on our website here. But if you can't decide and would like to experience the wines of this Rising Star we offer a Mixed Dozen comprising one bottle of each of the 12 wines....
