How time flies! We are already starting to see the first 2012 Burgundy Offers come through....
Domaine Roger Belland is run by Roger and his daughter Julie. They are the fifth and sixth generations of the family to manage the domaine.
They cultivate an impressive 23 hectares of vines in the Cote de Beaune. When I first visited the domaine it was for their impressive White Burgundies including the classic Criots-Batard-Montrachet. What I also discovered was a range of reds from Santenay that are surprisingly deep and complex and won may fans amongst our clients.
Domaine Roger Belland's 2012 offer has just come through and we are delighted to present the range of whites and reds. White Burgundy buyers will be interested to know that the domaine uses DIAM closures.
A little about the 2012 vintage. This started as a very difficult year. The first half of 2012 was terrible; cold, wet and miserable. Vines were slow to develop, flowering was extended and hail damaged part of the Cote. But as Clive Coates says "The quality is decided by what the climate is like in August and September, that is by the month's run up to the harvest, and the weather during it."
Warm to hot weather from mid-July through September saw a complete reversal of form. Coates say "...in the end - quality-wise - 2012 has turned out, not merely 'all right', but really very good indeed, if not perhaps even very fine. I have already heard the wines refered to as 'classic'. There are some who regard the potential of 2012 reds as superior to anything recent, and that includes 2010, 2009, 2005 and other years."
I tasted a huge number of wines from the 2012 vintage mid year. There are many tremendous wines. The reds have structure and style with a little more fruit than 2010. There is richness with true Burgundian style and a clear expression of the terroir. The whites also have a richness with purity and power with plenty of attack. The biggest problem with 2012 will be the small quantity versus the high quality.
