Terrific New Scores on the Whites from Antonio Galloni....

Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur is a Volnay and Meursault specialist. The domaine was founded in 1860 and is a tried and true standard bearer for all that is fundamentally good and sound in Burgundy: conscientious and sensitive work in the vineyards, respect above all for the specific character of each lieu-dit, patience and attention to detail in the cellar, and a commitment to producing wines of depth and, of critical importance, longevity.

Today the wine making is handled by Francois Bitouzet who, like many of his generation, has improved and refined the domaine's style. In terms of character, the domaine's wines are models of typicity, finesse and elegance.

Bitouzet Chenes new The domaine produces an excellent range of Volnay 1er Crus and some lovely Meursault including the exceptional 1er Cru Perrieres. Their Volnay vines come from the father's side and the Meursault vines from the wife's family. It is a good combination!

Vintage 2011 offers a different style of wine to 2009 and 2010. The wines are very transparent and fresh and will drink well young but also cellar well. Alcohol is relatively low allowing the nuances to come to the fore. They are stylish and delicious. Francois Bitouzet thinks the 2011's will age longer than the 2010's because they have a little more acidity and tension.

Bitouzet Perrieres New

Antonio Galloni has just completed his reviews of many 2011 White Burgundies. He says of the vintage "While the 2010s had a lot of everything (sugars, acidity, structure) it can be said that as a rule the 2011s have less of everything, but in proportion, which is why the wines generally have terrific balance. The style of the year is open and resonant, but the wines have less volume and ripeness than the 2009s. In some ways, 2011 can be viewed as taking elements from both 2009 and 2010, with less voluptuousness than 2009 and less of the intense, mineral-inflected, terroir-driven style of 2010." His reviews of the Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur wines, having the benefit of tasting finished wines in bottle, are very good.

Chateau de la Tour Vougeot VV

Burghound 96-Point Grand Cru

12 bottles available

A good client has asked us to sell some premium wines from his cellar. Amongst his offerings was a case of the Chateau de la Tour Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes 2009.

This is a serious wine which Burghound has scored 96 Points and Tanzer 95 Points.

This is both more elegant and more expressive, which is quite unusual in my experience as there is usually quite a bit of reticence. The lightly spiced and distinctly floral and earthy red currant and humus suffused aromas give way to rich, round and admirably concentrated flavors that display an overt muscularity as well as an abundance of dry extract that stains the palate and pushes the firm tannic spine to the background on the explosively long and overtly austere finish. Like the 2010 VV, this is a genuinely remarkable effort and it should be on your short list of '09s to potentially acquire as it's truly breathtaking. I have underscored the advice several times but it bears repeating: don't buy these wines without having the discipline to cellar them.
96 Points

The wine is well priced for such a highly rated Grand Cru.

$350.00 a bottle
