Great drinking French Chardonnay from 115 year old vines!
The Macon produces some of France's best value white wines. The only problem is that some makers produce wines that are lead-footed.
But not Domaine de la Verpaille.
Their wines are always mineral and fresh with a savoury character. That's why we import them!
Their 2011 Macon Villages Vieilles Vignes is produced from 115 year old vines which add depth and character.
Another great Macon from Verpaille. I see a lot of similarities with the 2010.
There is a suggestion of Chablis at the start - minerals and chalk. Then the wine opens out with citric, stony character. It is fine and quite taught, obviously Chardonnay, but in a savoury French style. The old vines add intensity but all the time retaining a freshness that finishes bright and crisp for Macon. Outperforms many Macons that cost considerably more.
Great buying!
