Two wines not to be missed

Our Rhone Revolution weekend showcased some exceptional wines. The lineup at our Dinner at The Smith was terrific with wine after wine showing beautifully and really highlighting just how great the 2010 vintage is. (Sydney clients can taste the same lineup at our Dinner at Fix St James on 9 September).

Based on after tasting sales the two Stars of the Dinner were Domaine Tour St-Michel Chateauneuf-du-Pape Feminessance 2010 and Domaine de la Solitude Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Cornelia Constanza 2010.

We have secured additional stocks of both wines from the domaines and present them at Pre Arrival Prices.

Domaine Tour St-Michel Chateauneuf-du-Pape Feminesance 2010

Normal Price $99.50

Pre Arrival Price $84.00

Tour Saint-Michel Feminesessance Label The Domaine's prestige cuvee. From vines 60 years plus of age. 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah. Partly destemmed. Aged for 12 months in small oak barrels, of which a portion are new. For a prestige cuvee this is a bargain!

Rhone Report: Easily the most modern in the lineup, yet absolutely beautifully done, the 2010 Domaine Tour Saint-Michel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Feminessence is a blend of 65% Grenache and 35% Syrah that is aged half in new, and half in 1-year-old, French oak barrels. It offers up an intense array of black cherry liqueur, blackberry, white chocolate, vanilla, and spice box-like aromatics that give way to a full-bodied, seamless palate that has a decadent, almost voluptuous texture, pure fruit, and brilliant richness. I am certainly a fan, but it will not be for everyone given the modern slant. Nevertheless, I think the oak and modern profile here will mostly integrate with 4-5 years of bottle age, and it will have 12-15 years or more of total longevity. 94 Points

Domaine de la Solitude Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Cornelia Constanza 2010

Normal Price $169.95

Pre Arrival Price $144.50

Wooden Case of 6 Bottles $866.00

Solitude Cornelia Constanza Label 100% Grenache from 100+ year old vines. Only around 3,000 bottles are produced and only in top years. First produced in 2005. This wine was brilliant!

Rhone Report: Even better and one spectacular example of old vine Grenache, the 2010 Cuvée Cornelia Constanza is 100% Grenache and comes from 90+ year old vines and the sandy of the famed La Crau lieu-dit. Overflowing with kirsch liqueur, wild strawberry, ground pepper, herbs de Provence, licorice, and garrigue, this is a no holds bar, thrill ride of a wine that is full-bodied, decadently textured, and perfectly balanced. Layered, multi-dimensional, and seamless, yet with gorgeous underlying structure and concentration, this might be a love it or leave it wine for most people, yet it offers a level of pure Grenache hedonism that just cannot be found anywhere else. I think it will age beautifully, yet do not be afraid to open bottle early either as it a knockout bottle of wine now. 98 Points

We all know that 2010 is a tremendous vintage in the Southern Rhone. Perfectly ripe grapes produced wines of balance and style with depth and concentration. The acid balance is exceptional and this will ensure the wines enjoy a long life. Click here to view our full selection of Chateauneuf-du-Pape including many great 2010's.

Caillou Grenache Bottle

Le Clos du Caillou Chateuneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Tradition 2011

This is a brand new cuvee from Le Clos du Caillou. We didn't have it at the Rhone Revolution because at the time of organizing wines I did not know it existed.

I tasted the wine at the domaine in June and was blown away by its aromatics and purity.

This is like a great Chateauneuf of yesteryear. Elegant, complex and certainly not a blockbuster. It reminds me of great old Rayas of the '70's and '60's. which were quite Burgundy-like.

This new cuvee is produced from 100% Grenache grown on sandy soils. This is the recipe used for Chateau Rayas and it is a delight to see a return to this traditional style.  A wonderfully aromatic nose of raspberry, kirsch, smoke and minerals. The palate is remarkably elegant: add notes of liquorice and a stony coolness. This wine is by no means a blockbuster. In fact it reminds me of Burgundy with its lilting aromatics, fine tannins and freshness. A wonderful example of Grenache from the sandy soils of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. It is not Chateau Rayas but the intent is there. This is a wine you will enjoy to drink. Delicious!

Normal Price $74.50

Pre Arrival Price $63.50
