2002 Beaune 1er Cru Les Greves direct from the domaine's dark and cold cellars
And how about the Price!
We've been bowled over by the response to this offer. After just 48 hours we are down to the last 21 cases. The opportunity to buy quality aged Burgundy, direct from the producer, does not come along every day. And when it is at a price this good it is not to be missed.
Beaune 1er Cru Greves is the best vineyard in the commune. It produces wines that are rich, structured and very long lived. From a top year they are wines that can age 20, 30, 40 or even 50 years.
In our last container Domaine Doudet sent me a box or two of samples for consideration. A lack of time meant I did not get around to opening them all. Tuesday night, when I was looking for a wine to have with dinner, I "discovered" a bottle of 2002 Beaune 1er Cru Les Greves they had sent.
I like the 2002 vintage, although I find some wines are more forward than I would anticipate. I also like Les Greves a lot. It produces serious wines and I have consumed bottles from the 1940's that are exceptional (both red and white).
So this bottle of 2002 was opened with some expectation. What came out of the bottle amazed me. I was not prepared for an 11-year-old Burgundy to look like it was made almost yesterday! Such is the power of great material, light-handed winemaking and dark, cold French cellars.

Brilliant, vibrant red-black. If one did not know the age of the wine you could easily be thinking 2010. It looks that fresh. Cool, tight, dark nose oozing with minerality. Black fruits, a hint of liquorice, cassis and violet. Masses of extract.
Fresh and very mineral in the mouth. Intense, concentrated, structured and very long on the palate. Deep and brooding with fine grained tannins driving the finish.
This is one serious and extremely age-worthy bottle of Beaune.
Sourced direct from the domaine's cellars this wine is ridiculously cheap. It is priced at less than you could buy a bottle of 2011 Beaune 1er Cru Les Greves. Buy a case and leave it in the cellar for a decade or more. Those of you who have been receiving my emails for some time will know I don't recommend wines this highly all that often.
