One of the most interesting exercises of yesterday's Rhone Tastings was the comparison of the four Chateauneuf-du-Papes in Ogier's 2010 "Expression de Terroir" Set.
The Set comprises four wines, all with the same blend of 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Mouvedre and 10% Cinsault, made from grapes grown on the four different soil types of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Vinification of all wines is the same; traditional with a long maceration, frequent pigeage and pumping over. The wines are aged for 12-14 months in large truncated oak vats.
Only the terroir varies!
The four terroirs are: Eclats Calcaires (limestone rock), Safres (marl), Gres Rouge (degraded red sandstone) and Galet Roules (rounded glacier pebbles).
I asked everybody who tasted the wines which they thought was the best. To my surprise there was no clear favourite. It just goes to show how we all have different palates and look for different nuances and characters.
We have all four wines on Special during our Rhone Revolution weekend. Instead of the usual $69.95 a bottle these 2010 Expression de Terroir wines are available at $59.50 a bottle.
Better still you can buy the full Set of 4 for $238.00 and do this informative tasting yourself. It is well worth doing.
Or if you want to go the whole hog we have a small number of Packs containing the 2010 and 2009 Expression de Terroir Sets.
We have discounted the Pack 15% and to make up a dozen bottles we have thrown in 4 bottles of the Gold Medal Winning 2009 Cotes-du-Rhone Oratorio for free.
The result is you get $667.60 of wine for just $475.66 - a saving of $191.94.
