Hail decimates Burgundy (again). Time to stock up before prices rise

Hail decimates Cote de Beaune Header

For the second year in a row the Cote de Beaune has suffered a catastophic hail storm....

After three small vintages in a row winemakers in Burgundy were hoping for a bumper crop in 2013. The vintage has already been plagued by unusually cool and wet conditions but weather in the last month had taken a turn for the better. Now everything is in disarray with a massive hail storm striking the Cote de Beaune.

Pommard, Volnay, Savigny-les-Beaune, Beaune and Meursault are the worst hit with reports of damage to the crop as high as 90%. To read the article in Bloomberg click here. To view a brief video of Nicolas Rossognol surveying the damage in Pommard click here.

It is a tragedy for winemakers who are already under a lot of financial pressure. For some, production 2010 to 2013 will average out at about half of what is considered normal, and that makes things very difficult.

I have already indicated that the price increases we have seen for 2011 Burgundy are just a forewarning of what to expect in 2012. Many domaines will be forced to increase prices substantially to ensure their livelyhood. Combine this with the fall in the value of the Australian Dollar and Burgundy will become expensive compared to today's prices.

Our stocks of 2009 and 2010 Burgundy are rapidly diminishing. Not a day goes by without wines selling out. And, of course, even if there was further stock available, we could not replace it to sell at our current price.

If you are a Burgundy lover with some space in the cellar I do urge you to think hard about stocking up on 2009 and 2010. They are both excellent, if different, vintages and in a few years time you will look back and marvel at how inexpensive they were.

The links below will take you to the wines on our website. As usual you are welcome to mix and match.
