Cicero and Pliny the Elder were apparently big fans of the wines of Minervois. Located in Languedoc-Rousillon, this is a rugged land, rich in history.
Minervois itself lies between Carcassone and Narbonne. Carignan used to be the dominant grape here, and maybe that's what Cicero was drinking after addressing the Roman Senate, but these days Minervois reds are also blended with Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache, Cinsault et al.
Anne Gros and Jean Paul Tollot are well known Burgundy winemakers who have set up a winery in Minervois.
Having searched the Languedoc high and low for their dream vineyard site, husband and wife team Anne Gros (Domain Anne Gros - Vosne Romanee) and Jean -Paul Tollot (Domain Tollot-Beaut - Chorey Les Beaune) discovered 14 quite beautiful hectares of vines surrounding the tiny hamlet of Cazelles in the Minervois AOC.
Anne says 'we chose Cazelles for its soil diversity of limestone and sandstone on which are planted the four main grape varieties of
the region, Carignan, Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. The vines were in excellent condition and of varying ages (much of it ancient), planted in an ideal location at the foot of the Montagne Noire at 220 metres altitude (similar to Vosne Romanee).
