Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur is a Volnay and Meursault specialist. The domaine was founded in 1860 and is a tried and true standard bearer for all that is fundamentally good and sound in Burgundy: conscientious and sensitive work in the vineyards, respect above all for the specific character of each lieu-dit, patience and attention to detail in the cellar, and a commitment to producing wines of depth and, of critical importance, longevity.
Today the wine making is handled by Francois Bitouzet who, like many of his generation, has improved and refined the domaine's style. In terms of character, the domaine's wines are models of typicity, finesse and elegance.
The domaine produces an excellent range of Volnay 1er Crus and some lovely Meursault including the exceptional 1er Cru Perrieres. Their Volnay vines come from the father's side and the Meursault vines from the wife's family. It is a good combination!
Vintage 2011 offers a different style of wine to 2009 and 2010. The wines are very transparent and fresh and will drink well young but also cellar well. Alcohol is relatively low allowing the nuances to come to the fore. They are stylish and delicious.
Remington Norman features Bitouzet-Prieur in his standard reference The Great Domaines of Burgundy.
Bitouzet-Prieur's 2011 production, like all domaines, was well down from normal. When you combine low yields with appealing prices it is no wonder these wines are very popular.
