Domaine Castagnier own some wonderful old vines in the Cote de Nuits.
In 2007 Jerome Castagnier took over from his father Guy and like so many of these generational changes in Burgundy the quality of the wines from this small domaine has soared.
Today's Castagnier wines are deeply coloured with vibrant, sappy fruit. They capture the essence of their appellations and with a bevy of old vines they have depth and texture. They are charming with delicious flavours.
They are, at the moment, an incredible bargain. Where else can you buy Grand Crus from the north at under $150.00?
I tasted the 2012's from barrel last week and they are simply stunning. Pressure for high quality grapes from the small 2012 vintage suggests that they will be at least 20% more expensive than the 2011's.
But for the moment we still have small quantities of the terrific 2011's available.
That's the good news. The bad news is that with the fall in the value of the Australian Dollar we will be increasing our Pre Arrival Prices by 10-15%.
You have until 4pm this Friday 5 July 2013 to take advantage of our Current Prices.
You can buy the Grand Crus Charmes-Chambertin, Clos-St-Denis and Clos de la Roche for just $139.00 a bottle. Castagnier's best wine - the Clos Vougeot - is $157.00. This wine comes from the climat Grand Maupertuis, considered by many to be the finest section of this large Grand Cru. Forget your prejudices - it is seriously good.
Here's what is available in Reds:
Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru $139.00
Clos de la Roche Grand Cru $139.00
Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru $139.00
Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru $157.00
Don't forget about the Villages wines. They too are very good. The Morey-St-Denis is almost entirely from the 1er Cru Aux Cheseaux. Jerome also has a selection of whites (including Chevalier-Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne) from the negociant arm of his business. These wines are listed on our website.
