Great value Nuits-St-Georges including the future Grand Cru (?)

Les Saint-Georges for just $98.25!

Some time has passed since our original offer for Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux. In those weeks I have tasted hundreds of Burgundies from 2011 and 2012.

In 2012 we have another serious vintage on the way, albeit in very small quantities. More about this another day.

2011 is an "old fashioned" vintage in the sense that the alcohol is low, the fruit aromatic, and the wines offer the potential for early, and delicious, drinking. It is the kind of vintage that many drinkers may never have seen in this day of deep, powerful wines.

Across the board the quality of 2011 is not as consistent as 2010. However, the wines are more drinkable and will not require extended cellaring. One should remember that cellaring potential does not automatically equate to great drinking.

Back to Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux....

As I sat down to write my original offer I read that Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les St-Georges has applied for promotion to Grand Cru status. It has long been considered one of the likely candidates based on quality and the feeling that Nuits-St-Georges is somewhat hard done by with no Grand Crus. You can read the article in Decanter Magazine here. Being France this will be a long and drawn out process.

The timing brought a smile to my face as I wrote up a rather exciting Nuits-St-Georges domaine joining our merry band of Burgundy producers.

Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux is an 8.61 hectare estate in Nuits-St-Georges. They own 14 different appellations but the jewels in the crown are their five 1er Cru Reds including Les St-Georges.

The husband and wife are well connected - Claire is a cousin of the owners of Domaine Robert Chevillon and Philippe is the brother of Jerome from Domaine Jerome Chezeaux who is also in our portfolio.

I tasted both 2010 and 2011 vintages at the domaine. I was super impressed with the precision and finesse of the 2011's. I think they were superior to 2010. A big statement, I know. Having tasted several hundred 2011 red Burgundies on this trip alone I think Domaine Chevillon-Chezaux has produced some of the best and most stylish wines of the vintage.

Quality is one thing but price also needs to be attractive and the domaine is very reasonable. To introduce this new maker we have decided to extend our 20% Pre Arrival discount for another week. So for the next 7 days you can buy terrific Premier Cru Reds from Nuits-St-Georges for as little as $68.75 a bottle! The Les St-Georges is $98.25 and worth every cent.

Chevillon-Chezeaux Les St GeorgesFrom a 0.45 hectare holding planted in 1947.

Beautiful vibrant colour. Deeper and more profound than the four previous wines. Spice, an amalgam of fruits, earth, violets. Plenty of extract and a rich, creamy texture from the old vines. Long and serious, but not heavy and rustic like wines of the past.

A serious Nuits-St-Georges of the modern style. The terroir clear and precise. Classy and complex and worthy of Grand Cru status.

Compare this to other Les St-Georges in the market. This is a bargain!

I can honestly say these wines are amongst the most interesting 2011 Burgundies I have tasted. In fact I have tasted some great Nuits-St-Georges from the vintage.
