Grand Cru Burgundy at Premier Cru Prices - Domaine Castagnier

Grand Cru Burgundy from the

Cote de Nuits for $123.00!

We're not kidding!

I met Jerome Castagnier at the Grands Jours de Bourgogne last year. To be honest I had tasted the wines of his father which were previously imported into Australia and had not been particularly impressed. The domaine had great vineyards but the wines did not excite.

But something had changed.

I spoke with Jerome and he explained he had taken control following the retirement of his father Guy in 2007. And like so many of these generational changes in Burgundy the quality of the wines had soared. He explained they no longer had an Australian importer and invited me to visit his winery in Morey-St-Denis.

Castagnier Roche Bottle The tasting that ensued showed me just how good the new wines of Domaine Castagnier are. They capture the essence of their appellations and with a bevy of old vines they have depth and texture. They are charming with delicious flavours.

A glance at the price list ensured further joy as the wines are very reasonably priced. In fact the Grand Crus are much the same price as many producers' Premier Crus. They are incredible bargains in today's market.

We struck a deal and we have an allocation of the new 2011 vintage to offer.

As charming as Jerome is he is a little disorganized or very busy, or perhaps both. We are still waiting for label images so our website presentation looks a little bare. Castagnier's wines are not reviewed by Burghound but are very well critiqued by the major French Guides Bettane and Desseauve and Le Guide Hachette des Vins. Alas, being annual publications the 2011 reviews have not yet been published.

I assure you from my tasting this is a domaine to watch. If I was not impressed by what I saw I would not be importing the wines.

With the lack of information I figure we need to make our initial offer very attractive. For a limited time, instead of the usual 15% Pre Arrival Discount, we offer a 25% discount. This makes the wines extremely affordable. We don't have huge quantities of anything so please don't think too long or you could miss out.

Here's what is available in Reds:

Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru $123.00

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru $123.00

Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru $123.00

Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru $138.95

Gevrey-Chambertin $57.75

Morey-St-Denis $57.75

Chambolle-Musigny $57.75

Don't forget about the Villages wines. They too are very good. The Morey-St-Denis is almost entirely from the 1er Cru Aux Cheseaux. Jerome also has a selection of whites (including Chevalier-Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne) from the negociant arm of his business. These wines are listed on our website.

Blanchet Pouilly-Sur-Loire Label

Domaine Gilles Blanchet Pouilly-Sur-Loire 2012

$199.95 a Case of 12 Bottles!

There is still time to grab some of this terrific everyday drinking white at our Special Case Price.

Bright and light. White flowers, hazelnut, leatherwood honey, smoke, a discreet and complexing hint of sulphides. Quite a haunting character that reminds me at times of Chablis. Round and quite full in the mouth, a little pith and pineapple acidity. A refreshing, dry, crisp, mineral, finish.

I particularly like the wine served quite cold when it would make an exceptional match to shellfish, especially oysters. It makes me think of the fresh seafood and crisp white wines I have enjoyed along the seaside in France.

Normally $23.50 a bottle
Super 12-Bottle Case Price $199.95 (=$16.66 a bottle)
