Monopole Magic - 2 Outstanding Clos in Puligny-Montrachet

Chartron Monopole Header

"Jean-Michel Chartron has been on a hot streak for several years now and one day the wine world is going to wake up to the superb quality of these wines and they are going to become
much more difficult to source."

John Gilman, A View from the Cellar Issue 42 on the 2011 Vintage

Domaine Jean Chartron has a magnificent range of wines from Puligny-Montrachet and nearby. The Grand Crus include Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Batard-Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne.

On top of that there is a range of Premier Crus of which two always stand out as extremely special wines. Both are Clos (a walled vineyard) and both are Monopoles (a single owner).

The wines are Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Pucelle and 1er Cru Clos du Cailleret.

The vineyards themselves are well situated. Between them they adjoin all of the Grand Cru vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet. Not surprisingly the wines have more than their fair share of Grand Cru style. They are both complex, mineral, stylish and long. I rate them up there with the 1er Crus of another famous maker who costs twice the price.

The 2011's are soon to be shipped and we still have both wines available.

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Clos de la Pucelle 2011

Normal Price $159.50

Pre Arrival Price $135.50

Chartron Clos Pucelle Label

John Gilman, A View from the Cellar: The 2011 Clos de la Pucelle is exceptional this year, with a lovely structured personality that still shows off all of the elegance and purity of terroir to come with just a bit of bottle age. The deep, pure and classy nose wafts from the glass in a complex blend of apple, white peach, orange zest, chalky soil tones, a touch of fresh almond and a lovely base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nascently complex, with a lovely sense of reserve, a rocksolid core, crisp acids and excellent length and grip on the focused and utterly classic finish. 2016-2040+. 93+ Points

Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Clos du Caillerets 2011

Normal Price $159.50

Pre Arrival Price $135.50

Chartron Clos Cailleret Label

John Gilman, A View from the Cellar: The 2011 Clos de Caillerets from Domaine Chartron is another superb example of the vintage, wafting from the glass in a stunning mélange of pear, apple, tangerine, complex minerality, lime zest, spring flowers and a discreet base of new wood. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with outstanding soil inflection, a very mineral personality, excellent focus and superb cut and grip on the very long and primary finish. This is electric on the palate, but give it a few years to really blossom and unlock is secondary layers of complexity. A beautiful wine. 2017-2040+. 93+ Points

Chartron Dent de Chien

Domaine Jean Chartron Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Murgers des Dents de Chien 2011

Located just across the border from Puligny-Montrachet lies the St-Aubin Premier Cru vineyard of Murgers des Dents de Chien. The name comes from the piles of stone creates when a vigneron clears the land for planting "Murgers" and "Dent de Chien" - dog's tooth. Working this vineyard, with its sharp stones, is particularly difficult.

The wines from this site have much in common with their more illustrious neighbours across the border. They are mineral and intense with fine acidity and great length - very Puligny-Montrachet in style. It is one of those little gems that Burgundy lovers know and keep to themselves.

Domaine Jean Chartron is one of a small number of producers who own Murgers des Dents de Chien. His parcel is brilliantly located immediately above Chevalier-Montrachet.

John Gilman, A View from the Cellar:

As I noted last year, Domaine Chartron's parcel in this Murgers des Dents de Chien lies right alongside that of Domaine Hubert Lamy's, in the section of the vineyard immediately above Chevalier-Montrachet and this wine is absolutely superb in 2011. The very classy bouquet offers up a complex mélange of pear, white peach, a touch of tangerine, chalky soil tones, apple blossoms and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and absolutely rock solid at the core, with crisp acids, outstanding focus and a very long, complex and nicely structured finish. This is a dynamite wine in 2011! 2014-2030. 92 Points

Normal Price $75.00

Pre Arrival Price $63.75
