Rosso di Montalcino 2009
Normally $49.00
Special $29.40
100% Sangiovese. Spends 7 months in Slavonian oak barrels.
John Gilman, A View from the Cellar: The 2009 Rosso di Montalcino from Altesino is a very lovely bottle that harkens back stylistically to the wines made at this estate twenty years ago. The wine is aged for seven or eight months in old, large botti and the 2009's measured alcohol level of 13.5 percent allows the wine to show off an impressive degree of precision on both the nose and palate. The bouquet is a classy and focused blend of red and black cherries, a touch of orange peel, coffee, fresh herbs and a nice base of soil. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, impressively complex and moderately tannic, with lovely structure and balance and really very good length and grip on the fine finish. This is decidedly superior to many examples of Brunello I have tasted in the last year and is a superb value.
