1er Cru Vide Bourse - The "Petit Batard". Last 6 Magnums of Clos-St-Denis 2010

Pillot Vide Bourse Header

Located immediately below the Grand Cru Batard-Montrachet it is no wonder Jasper Morris MW describes 1er Cru Vide Bourse as "Petit Batard"!

Scattered throughout Burgundy are some very exciting Premier Cru vineyards. They are often quite small and don't belong to big names so they frequently fail to get the recognition they deserve.

Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Dent de Chien is one. It sits above Le Montrachet and not surprisingly often produces wine of a very similar style.

Even less well known is Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Vide Bourse. Vide Bourse, literally "empty purse", is a small 1.32 hectare vineyard directly below the Grand Cru Batard-Montrachet.

Jasper Morris MW says "The soil is relatively heavy but full of small stones, providing excellent drainage and giving some raciness to the wine which is one of the more full-bodied Chassagne premier crus. In many ways it is a 'petit' Batard, ready to drink rather earlier than the grand cru."

Pillot Vide Bourse Label There are very few makers, and even fewer owners, of this elusive vineyard. We are fortunate to have Fernand and Laurent Pillot in our portfolio who own a substantial 0.45 ha plot.

We have three vintages of the wine available. The 2011 is available Pre Arrival at $89.00 and the 2010 and 2009 are in stock (in small quantities) at $99.00 a bottle.

This is a vineyard I think all Burgundy lovers should at least taste.

You can view all three vintages and read tasting notes on our website by clicking here.

Orders may be placed on line or by email or phone. You are welcome to mix and match as you please. The 2011 will be shipped in June 2013.

Cheers,

Darren

Brilliant Magnums of Clos-St-Denis 2010
I consumed what turned out to be the last 750ml bottle of this Grand Cru Thursday night with enormous pleasure. When checking our stock to see what was left I noted we still have six MAGNUMS in stock!
This was a super wine from bottle and I can only imagine what the magnums will deliver.
Darren Harris: Black-red. Perfumed nose of deliciously ripe fruit with five spice, violets and a note of root liquorice. On the palate the same characters with a savoury note reminiscent of the the bitter edge of root liquorice with a salty tang. Perhaps this does not sound great but I can assure you it is enormously attractive. Lots of minerals. Plenty of extract. Fresh. Long. The tannins are very fine and the wine skirts that magic knife's edge of intense but not heavy bodied. This is a classic Clos-St-Denis - so much about the soil and the mineral, perfumed character that it provides. Terrific!

Tim Atkin MW is not wrong. This is a domaine to watch!

Brilliant buying for a 2010 Grand Cru MAGNUM.

These Magnums are much the same price as many 750ml bottles of Grand Cru Burgundy!
