Serious buying!
The story of Clos Vougeot begins almost a millennium ago. The monks of the Abbey of Citeaux acquired land here in the very early 12th century.

Over the centuries vineyards were planted and by 1336 the high stone wall was built around these prized vineyards. Clos Vougeot was the flagship vineyard of the Cistercians.

The Château du Clos de Vougeot, situated inside the wall, was added in 1551 by rebuilding and enlarging a small chapel.
During the French Revolution, all vineyard possessions were taken from the church by the French state, and sold off to private buyers. In 1818, the château and vineyards of Clos de Vougeot was bought by Julien-Jules Ouvrard, who also bought the Romanee-Conti vineyard in 1819. After Ouvrard's death, Clos de Vougeot passed to his three heirs, but continued to be operated as a single property until 1889, when the heirs put it up for sale. It was bought by six Burgundy wine merchants, leading to a subdivided vineyard for the first time since its creation more than 700 years earlier. After that, the holdings have been progressively subdivided by inheritance and land sales. In the early 2000s, Clos de Vougeot was split among more than 80 owners.
Clos Vougeot has always been one of the most ageworthy Grand Crus of Burgundy. In the past that was achieved by powerful tannins. However, the last decade has seen a change in style. Balance, freshness and complexity are the words now being used to describe Clos Vougeot. The tannins are more refined but the character has not been lost.
Domaine Jerome Chezeaux's parcel lies in the climat of Montiotes Hautes, just below the driveway to the chateau alongside Lamarche, Mugneret-Gibourg and Meo-Camuzet. This is considered one of the best areas of the Grand Cru.
I was a bit aggressive with my purchase of Magnums of Clos Vougeot so today we have a super special on them. I have also decided to add the 750ml bottles.
Today we offer both formats at a 40% End of Lockdown discount.
What could be better for the cellar to celebrate in 10 or 20 years hence than a Magnum of Grand Cru Burgundy that you picked up at a great price?

Bright red. Super lifted aromatics: cherry, kirsch, liquorice, minerals but mostly driven by a strong spice element. In the mouth this is full and round, quite juicy and succulent. It is long, silky and relaxed, the acid zingy and the fine-grained tannins shrouded by the beautiful fruit. The balance is impeccable as the wine is intense but feels very light on its feet. A really fine example of Clos Vougeot from a great vintage. Aromatic and supple enough to enjoy now but Clos Vougeot really is a wine for the cellar. Try to be patient!
