There are a few vineyard names in Burgundy that never fail to bring a smile to the faces of the more experienced drinker.
One of these is Dent de Chien which translates as dog's tooth. Why? Well the vineyard is full of sharp stones, resembling canine teeth, that have made the land hard to clear and difficult to work.
Located just across the border from Puligny-Montrachet lies the St-Aubin Premier Cru vineyard of Murgers des Dents de Chien. (A murger is the pile of stone created when the vigneron clears the land for planting).
The wines from this site have much in common with their more illustrious neighbours across the border. They are mineral and intense with fine acidity and great length - very Puligny-Montrachet in style. It is one of those little gems that Burgundy lovers know and keep to themselves.
We have recently offered the Jean Chartron Murgers de Dent de Chien 2011 which somewhat fittingly has been described as "dynamite" (not just the quality but what is needed to clear the land!).
We are now delighted to present the Alex Gambal wine. What a pair they make!
Alex Gambal St-Aubin 1er Cru Murgers des Dents de Chien 2011
Pre Arrival Price $63.75
Alex's vines are 35-45 years of age. From what I can work out his site is a little further north. However, it can't be much more than a stone's throw from Chartrons.
The Wine Spectator has visited Gambal and Burghound is due to visit in the coming week. However, such is the popularity of this vineyard that there is a serious risk that this wine will sell out before reviews are published.
Domaine Jean Chartron St-Aubin 1er Cru Murgers des Dents de Chien 2011
Pre Arrival Price $63.75
John Gilman, A View from the Cellar: As I noted last year, Domaine Chartron's parcel in this Murgers des Dents de Chien lies right alongside that of Domaine Hubert Lamy's, in the section of the vineyard immediately above Chevalier-Montrachet and this wine is absolutely superb in 2011. The very classy bouquet offers up a complex mélange of pear, white peach, a touch of tangerine, chalky soil tones, apple blossoms and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and absolutely rock solid at the core, with crisp acids, outstanding focus and a very long, complex and nicely structured finish. This is a dynamite wine in 2011! 2014-2030. 92 Points
