The new 2018 Releases from Domaine des Chezeaux. Plus a range of back vintages

Highly rated Burgundies from three top vintages
Created in 1982 from vines owned by the Mercier family since 1928, Domaine des Chezeaux comprises 4 hectares of high quality vineyards.
They own nearly 60% of Griotte-Chambertin (1.57 hectares) as well as vines in Clos St-Denis, Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Charmes, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut St-Jacques and Cazetiers and Gevrey villages.
While Domaine des Chézeaux sells wine under its own label, it does not work the vines or make the wines. All of their wines are made under metayage arrangements with either Laurent Ponsot or Amelie Berthaut.
The Griottes-Chambertin, Clos St. Denis, Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Charmes are made by Laurent Ponsot. The Gevrey 1er Cru and Village wines are made by Amelie Berthaut.
The arrangement is the same, and is indeed a very old French style of agreement. Ponsot and Berthaut work the vineyards and make the wines one third of the finished product is given to Chezeaux as payment.
The Domaine des Chezeaux wines are identical to those bottled under the Ponsot or Berthaut labels (simply one third of the bottled wines are returned to Chezeaux). Only the label design is different! (Oh, and the price - especially of the Ponsot-made wines).
If you are a fan of Domaine des Chezeaux, Ponsot or Berthaut wines you should not miss today's specialoffer for Domaine de Chezeaux.
The 2018's are offered Pre Arrival. They will be shipped early this year. The 2017 and 2016 vintages are both in stock.

Bill Nanson, The Burgundy Report
Ooh, this has such an unctuous, cassis and perfumed nose. Lots of volume, energy, layers of freshness. Big but delicious despite the shape there’s freshness.

Dense purple, perhaps some plums to the nose, a rich fruitcake style at the front of the palate, sterner stuff behind, some wood tannins along with those of Gevrey, but the fruit sails on through. Good length and weight. Tasted: December 2018. 89-91 Points
Domaine des Chezeaux (Berthaut) Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 2018
Landed Price $199.95
Special Pre Arrival Price $169.95
From a 0.22 hectare parcel of 40 year old vines.
Crunchier black fruit with a warming nose. Vines older than 60 years so yields are low but concentration is beautiful. Sweet perfume of black currant with a surprisingly powerful structure. Classically powerful Gevrey but ever so delightful.

From 0.13 hectares, located in the Combe de Lavaux, very high on the slope and with great south east exposure; 50 year-old vines with very low yields. The wine is structured, dense and spicy with excellent concentration and firm tannins on the finish. 80% whole cluster fermentation, with 30% new oak used during aging.

The Lavaut Saint Jacques – this year a bit more than 2 casks. A very charming but also a quite concentrated wine – with a juicy and generous fruit – fine stony mineral backbone. On the palate plenty of vivid fruit – juicy and charming – this is lovely. 92-93 Points
Neal Martin, Vinous
The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is matured in 50% new oak. There is a little reduction on the nose that makes it difficult to read at the moment. The palate is well balanced, offering brambly black fruit laced with crushed stone and sous-bois aromas, and nicely focused, with moderate weight on the tensile finish. There is plenty of energy infused into this Premier Cru, and it should drink well over 12 to 15 years. (Drink between 2022-2035). 91-93 Points
Domaine des Chezeaux (Ponsot) Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes 2018
Landed Price $350.00
Special Pre Arrival Price $262.50

Les Charmes produces one of Chambolle-Musigny's most appealing wines. Perhaps the name says it all. The wine is classic Chambolle with fresh, vibrant fruit, fine structure and always a mesmerizing aromatic bouquet. We are too early for reviews but this is a wine that always receives great scores.

Red to crimson in colour and a fresher bouquet, raspberry with a hint of something more acidulated. But ripe enough on the palate, is there a hint of volatile, if so doesn’t matter. Very exciting potential! Tasted: November 2019. 93-97 Points

Glowing fresh mid purple. Superb grace to the nose, magically juicy, then a firmer backbone behind. Some crunch here, only medium intensity, a wine to judge by its class more than its size. The fruit is ripe but not untidy, more in the fresh little red fruits register. Tasted: November 2018. 93-96 Points

John Gilman "View from the Cellar"
The 2017 Griotte-Chambertin from the Ponsots is excellent and very much cut from the same stylistic cloth as it was back during Laurent's time at the helm of Domaine Ponsot in Morey. The ripe and very expressive nose wafts from the glass in a mix of sappy black cherries, black plums, dark chocolate, chalky soil tones, grilled meats, mustard seed and a bit of beetroot in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, precise and impressively mineral in personality, with a sappy core, ripe tannins and fine balance and grip on the long, tangy and complex finish. A superb Ponsot Griotte! 2027-2075. 95 Points

In Laurent’s time at Domaine Ponsot this could be a veritable hit or a slight miss. The 2016 looks like the former. It has a gorgeous purple black centre, then a marvellous richness of red and black fruit through the middle, a very valuable bite of acidity, and all sorts of detailed little red fruits dancing across the palate, offering amazing detail. Very promising! 95-97 Points

Very much in its customary style, offering up a ripe and sappy nose of black cherries, plums, chocolate, roasted meats, a fine base of soil, a touch of mustard seed and plenty of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, powerful and opulent in personality, with a sappy core, fine-grained tannins and excellent length and grip on the long, tangy and beautifully balanced finish. A classic Griotte in the making. 2031-2080. 95+ Points

The vines were planted in 1905. Glowing purple, a vastly seductive bouquet of immensely rich ripe but balanced fruit. How many different types of raspberry. Ultra succulent, glorious and balanced. Doesn’t show much acidity but there is enough, and the tannins are totally enrobed. Tasted: November 2019. 96-99 Points

The vines were planted in 1905. The colour is an attractive rich mid purple. The nose is truly magisterial. Heady ripe red fruit, too well bred to count as an explosion of fruit. Too intense to be described as floral. Lovely balancing acidity and exceptional length. Hedonism in its optimal rather than maximal form. Tasted: November 2018. 5 Star Wine! 95-98 Points

Glowing purple, super ripe fruit, some chocolate notes and that bit of wrinkled grapeskin dryness, but a total explosion of fruit on the palate, around 13.5 he thinks. Certainly a massively long aftertaste. I shall be conservative here until we see how the balance of fruit intensity and possibly over-ripe flavours works out. Tasted: November 2019. 93-96 Points

From vines planted in 1961. No great density of colour but there is a heavenly nose nonetheless, roses, strawberry, pretty good weight behind, softer finish, fairly good length. Does this quite kick on? Tasted: November 2018. 92-96 Points
