Domaine Coudray-Bizot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 2014. Save 25% Today

Aged 5 years in the domaine's 15th century cellars!
Located alongside Clos St-Jacques in the Combe de Lavaux, Les Cazetiers is certainly one of the finest Premier Crus of Gevrey. Jasper Morris MW says "After Clos St-Jacques this is the most interesting vineyard of the Cote, with fine, elegant, complex wines, rarely deep in colour ...that age extremely well. Good Cazetiers has a feeling of refinement and precision which has an intellectusl appeal as well as being vinously satisfying."
It is certainly one of my favourite Gevrey Premier Crus and when our wines from Domaine Coudray-Bizot arrived I was eager to taste a bottle.
I selected the 2014 to taste first. Coudray's vines are located right alongside Clos St-Jacques and two-thirds are very old - 60 years of age - with the balance planted in 1999.
As you probably know by now the domaine holds wines back in their 15th century cellars in "downtown" Beaune for release when they determine the wines are drinking well. 2014 is the latest release shipped from their cellars. It is an expensive practice but means their wines already have a little more complexity when they arrive at their destination.
As this is a new producer we're going to give you one more opportunity to buy the wines at what was our original Pre Arrival Discount of 25%. But only for one day. Quantities are very limited so first-in, first-served.

Slightly mature, light red. Dense nose combining fruit and mineral tones with an oaky touch. Remarkably soft attack then slightly more palate weight with mature yet focused and very persistent aromatics. A great classic. 94 Points

Pale crimson and overall very dry and savoury. No sweet New World Pinot fruit trying to charm you - much more a rather dignified expression of terroir. Light bodied for a Gevrey and definitely understated. But a true nose of slightly austere Cazetiers. Lip smacking. But on the light side. May well develop further in bottle. 16+/20

Bright but quite pale in colour. Very perfumed nose - crunchy red fruit - raspberry red currants - rose petals, spicy whole bunch. Delicate but beautiful. A wafting reminder of Burgundy from times past. The palate delivers the same flavours on an intense but lighter than usual Gevrey frame. Long on the finish and very thought provoking. One has to say old fashioned winemaking from when extraction and oak were not king (or queen as is probably more apt). If you like wines that are all about power this is not for you. If you appreciate finesse and subtlety in your Burgundy you really should try this wine.

Flinty reduction still hovers and casts a spell of freshness and peppery verve over the clearly evolved nose of this wine. The palate falls into step with red-fruited, spicy intensity that has edges of autumnal, wet oak leaf and roast pumpkin. Red fruited tartness makes the mouth water and adds a sprightly freshness to this slender but profound wine. It's like a vision of autumnal forest shot through with red-fruited energy. Drink by 2030.

This mature wine comes from one of the finest premier cru vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin. While light in color, it has richness along with red-berry acidity. The tannins have softened to broaden this ripe wine that is ready to drink. 93 Points

Two-thirds 60 years of age, 1/3 replanted in 1999. The domaine's vines are located on the border of Clos St-Jacques. Medium red. Aromatic nose of red-black fruits with a mineral tang and a touch of iron filings. Very racy, a fine line of acid running through the mineral palate. The fruit is ripe and gently sweet and fills the mouth. Finish is tight with fine tannins, precision and excellent length.

Domaine Coudray-Bizot is a family run domaine with some prime vineyards. The domaine is located in the historic Chateau David de Beaufort with its 15th century cellars inside Beaune's mediaeval walls.

Their vineyards include Echezeaux En Orveaux, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers and Champeaux, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes and the rare and intriguing Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru La Croix Rameaux. They are one of just three owners of Vosne-Romanee's smallest Premier Cru.

During a trip to Burgundy a few years ago I met with the owners and tasted at the domaine. Jean-Jacques Coudray-Bizot produces wines of finesse and intensity. They describe the process as such "A wine-growing and wine production philosophy that respects traditions while combining modern precision and respect for nature."

They have an alternative policy when it comes to releasing their wines. Where most domaines like to ship their wines as soon as humanly possible, Coudray-Bizot prefer to hold their wines back in their dark, cold cellars to enable them develop complexity and interest. This was once quite commonplace in Burgundy but financial pressure sees it happen less and less.

Our first shipment from Coudray-Bizot has arrived and contains wines from the 2012, 2013 and 2014 vintages.

These are such unique wines that I think a dinner to showcase them would be of great interest to Burgundy lovers.

I have selected the top 3 wines from the domaine - Echezeaux En Orveaux, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers and the enigmatic and rare Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru La Croix Rameau and we will discover three vintages of each. To start we will taste the domaine’s single white - Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes from the great 2014 vintage.

The Croix Rameau is so rare that Burghound states in The Pearl of the Cote that he has never tasted the Coudray-Bizot!

These are “old-fashioned”, thought-provoking wines that remind me of great Burgundies I used to drink 20-30 years ago. It is terrific to see wines that are all about terroir and subtleties, not modern, powerful winemaking.

The dinner will only be for 9 persons including myself so everyone will get a good taste of the wines.
