Domaine Coudray-Bizot is a family run domaine with some prime vineyards. The domaine is located in the historic Chateau David de Beaufort with its 15th century cellars inside Beaune's mediaeval walls.
Their vineyards include Echezeaux En Orveaux, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers and Champeaux, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes and the rare and intriguing Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru La Croix Rameaux. They are one of just three owners of Vosne-Romanee's smallest Premier Cru.
During a trip to Burgundy a few years ago I met with the owners and tasted at the domaine. Jean-Jacques Coudray-Bizot produces wines of finesse and intensity. They describe the process as such "A wine-growing and wine production philosophy that respects traditions while combining modern precision and respect for nature."
They have an alternative policy when it comes to releasing their wines. Where most domaines like to ship their wines as soon as humanly possible, Coudray-Bizot prefer to hold their wines back in their dark, cold cellars to enable them develop complexity and interest. This was once quite commonplace in Burgundy but financial pressure sees it happen less and less.
Our first shipment from Coudray-Bizot has arrived and contains wines from the 2012, 2013 and 2014 vintages.
These are such unique wines that I think a dinner to showcase them would be of great interest to Burgundy lovers.
I have selected the top 3 wines from the domaine - Echezeaux En Orveaux, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers and the enigmatic and rare Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru La Croix Rameau and we will discover three vintages of each. To start we will taste the domaine’s single white - Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes from the great 2014 vintage.
The Croix Rameau is so rare that Burghound states in The Pearl of the Cote that he has never tasted the Coudray-Bizot!
These are “old-fashioned”, thought-provoking wines that remind me of great Burgundies I used to drink 20-30 years ago. It is terrific to see wines that are all about terroir and subtleties, not modern, powerful winemaking.
The dinner will only be for 9 persons including myself so everyone will get a good taste of the wines.
