Domaine de la Solitude Chateauneuf-du-Pape Dinner at Yagiz. Tuesday 23 February 2021

Domaine de la Solitude Chateauneuf-du-Pape Dinner at Yagiz. Tuesday 23 February 2021

Taste all 5 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Red Cuvees
There's some huge scores here!
Chronologically Domaine de la Solitude is one of the oldest estates in the entire Rhône region. By any other standard it's one of the most youthful. The tipping point took place a few years ago when young Florent Lançon stepped into the position of winemaker for the family estate. It's been lights out ever since, thanks to a string of mid-ninety point scores from the industry's top wine scribes and even more gratifying, high acclamation from a discerning peer group.
The domaine owns 35 hectares of vines in Chateauneuf du Pape. 30 hectares are devoted to the production of red wine and 5 hectares are used for growing grapes used to make their white Chateauneuf du Pape wine.
The vines are planted in a terroir of sand, loam, clay and rocky soils. Domaine de la Solitude has old vines. In fact, their oldest parcel of Grenache vines are more than 100 years old.
In 1985, Domaine de la Solitude made changes in their approach to wine making. They replaced their old foudres with concrete vats and stainless steel tanks. In 1996, they renovated their winemaking facilities again and began experimenting with using some new, French oak barrels as well for the aging process.
At the end of last century Domaine de la Solitude expanded their output, launching new labels. Cuvee Barberini made its debut in 1999 and the Reserve Secret was launched with the 2000 vintage. 2005 saw the 100% old vine Grenache Cornelia Constanza join the range and then in 2016 they introduced Vin de la Solitude, modelled on a centuries-old Chateauneuf blend with a high percentage of Counoise.
There some real thought goes into the wines here!
Today Solitude produces 5 different Chateuneuf-du-Pape red cuvees and we will taste them all this dinner. We will start with two whites and then move to four pairs of reds. To finish we will taste the 97/98 Point Reserve Secrete 2017. That said, all of the wines have tremendous reviews.
The dinner will be at Yagiz where their modern Middle Eastern Food will provide an excellent accompaniment. We have 12 seats for this dinner including myself.

A special dinner for 9 Burgundy lovers
1 seat left
Domaine Coudray-Bizot is a family run domaine with some prime vineyards. The domaine is located in the historic Chateau David de Beaufort with its 15th century cellars inside Beaune's mediaeval walls.

Their vineyards include Echezeaux En Orveaux, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers and Champeaux, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes and the rare and intriguing Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru La Croix Rameaux. They are one of just three owners of Vosne-Romanee's smallest Premier Cru.
During a trip to Burgundy a few years ago I met with the owners and tasted at the domaine. Jean-Jacques Coudray-Bizot produces wines of finesse and intensity. They describe the process as such "A wine-growing and wine production philosophy that respects traditions while combining modern precision and respect for nature."
They have an alternative policy when it comes to releasing their wines. Where most domaines like to ship their wines as soon as humanly possible, Coudray-Bizot prefer to hold their wines back in their dark, cold cellars to enable them develop complexity and interest. This was once quite commonplace in Burgundy but financial pressure sees it happen less and less.
Our first shipment from Coudray-Bizot has arrived and contains wines from the 2012, 2013 and 2014 vintages.
These are such unique wines that I think a dinner to showcase them would be of great interest to Burgundy lovers.
I have selected the top 3 wines from the domaine - Echezeaux En Orveaux, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers and the enigmatic and rare Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru La Croix Rameau and we will discover three vintages of each. To start we will taste the domaine’s single white - Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes from the great 2014 vintage.
The Croix Rameau is so rare that Burghound states in The Pearl of the Cote that he has never tasted the Coudray-Bizot!
These are “old-fashioned”, thought-provoking wines that remind me of great Burgundies I used to drink 20-30 years ago. It is terrific to see wines that are all about terroir and subtleties, not modern, powerful winemaking.
The dinner will only be for 9 persons including myself so everyone will get a good taste of the wines.

Camus Dinner Ryne header
A Rare Opportunity

After many months of lockdown we're feeling in need of a Grand Cru lashout. Having not been to France to taste for what feels like an eternity we have decided to open the full array of 12 Grand Crus that have recently arrived from Domaine Camus at our first dinner of 2021.

The dinner will be at Ryne and chef Donovan Cooke will prepare a matching 4-course meal to complement the wines.

There are only 10 seats available so do not delay. Everyone will get a good pour of the 12 wines.

We imagine this dinner will sell quickly as it is not often 12 Grand Cru Burgundies are served at one sitting.
