Clive Coates MW was probably the first critic to tackle the complexity of Burgundy. His publication THE VINE was issued between 1984 and 2005 and provided the best information oenophiles could find. In addition to its 241 issues Coates has also written some of the most important wine books including Cote d'Or, one of the standard references on Burgundy.
So when Clive says something is seriously good wine lovers take note.
He has recently published his 3 Year appraisal of 2009 Burgundy. His reviews of the 2009 reds three years on are very strong. In addition to many notes he has listed his top wines and we are delighted to see a number of our imports on the illustrious list.

Whilst most of the wines have sold out we do have a small quantity of the Domaine du Clos Frantin Richebourg 2009, which Coates scored 19.5, available. The Domaine belongs to Albert Bichot who run it independently. Their Richebourg holding is a minute 0.07 hectares which means production is a barrel!
None of the wines in Coates' top 15 are cheap. Many are well over $1000.00 a bottle, if you can find them! In fact this Clos du Frantin Richebourg may just be the most affordable wine on the Top 15 List! It is certainly the rarest!

Coates: Medium-full colour. Full-flavoured, aromatic nose. Slightly four square at first. Full bodied, concentrated and vigorous. Generous, very fine grip and intensity. Lots of dimension and a touch of spice. Very fine indeed. 19.5/20
Burghound: This is both the most elegant wine among these '09s but it's also the most complex as there is excellent freshness to the highly spiced ripe plum and cassis suffused nose. I very much like the energy and verve of the detailed, intense and quite mineral-driven big-boned flavors that are underpinned by ripe, firm and mouth coating tannins, all wrapped in a linear and impressively long and deep finish. This is a classy and very stylish effort that is worth considering and the dried rose petal character of the finish is most attractive. A stunner of a wine but note that it is built for the very long haul. 95 Points
