Issue 49 of Burghound has just arrived. It features 2011 Red Burgundy from the Cote de Nuits.
Much has been written about the 2011 vintage. Reports from the serious reviewers are beginning to appear and the impression of the vintage is very positive.
Burghound states "From an overall quality perspective, I would go so far as to say that out of the triumvirate of 2009, 2010 and 2011 that 2009 is in third place, 2011 in second and 2010 is in first. 2011 doesn't quite hit the highest highs of 2010, and it's not quite as
consistent as 2009 but it's encouraging to consider that it is competitive with both. Moreover, any number of producers made
outstanding 2011s and thus despite the relatively short crop, it will still be possible to find them to purchase for your cellars."
That is a big call as we all know just how good the 2009s can be.
We have started to update our website with the reviews and the first cab off the rank is Domaine Jean-Michel Guillon. His wines were very well received in 2010 and we are delighted to see his 2011s have received extremely strong reviews. In fact the scores are almost identical to his 2010s, and in a number of cases higher. This is a domaine to watch!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Domaine Jean-Michel Guillon was established in 1980. Jean-Michel was in aeronautics and when he caught the wine bug he did so big-time! In the ensuing years the domaine, which started from scratch, has grown to an impressive 13 hectares and features a range of vineyards mostly in Gevrey-Chambertin. These include a lovely range of Gevrey Premier Crus and the Grand Crus Mazis-Chambertin and Clos Vougeot.
He continues to expand and in 2011 has added the Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux and a new Cote de Nuits to the portfolio.
This is a great place to explore the terroirs of Gevrey-Chambertin as Jean-Michel now has five different Premier Crus! And don't forget the majestic Mazis-Chambertin, a big favourite in 2010 and sure to be once again in 2011.
All of the wines are offered at Pre Arrival Prices which will save you 15% on the landed prices. We offer 16 different wines at Pre Arrival Prices starting at just $32.50.
2011 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Normally $232.50
Pre Arrival Price $197.95
Adjoining Chambertin Clos de Beze, Mazis-Chambertin produces wines with the similar exciting, wild, slightly exotic character of its neighbour. Guillon owns 0.18 ha which is not a lot! This wine is always limited so get in quick if you would like some.
Burghound: This is an extraordinarily ripe 2011 with notes of menthol, dried plum, spice, cassis and sauvage nuances. Despite the heightened ripeness levels there is still good energy to the tension-filled and overtly powerful flavors that possess much finer tannins compared to those of the Clos de Vougeot. This is really quite classy and while it's hugely long and altogether serious, it is notably less austere. Note however that like its grand cru stable mate, this will require plenty of bottle age. 92-95 Points. Drink: 2018+
