One of last year's discoveries. The 2010's sold out in a flash - now we offer the 2011's...
Most of us are rather partial to a glass or two of Chardonnay, particularly when it is from France. Located just south of Beaune, the Macon, which is part of Burgundy, is producing increasingly fine wines. The World Atlas of Wine by Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson says "The slightly warmer climate than that of the Cote d'Or suits the Chardonnay grape, which seems gloriously at home in the Maconnais."
I discovered Domaine de la Verpaille last year. They produce wines biodynamically from unbelievably old vines and sell them at a remarkable price.
The wines are not big and broad, but are fine and mineral, with some similarities to Chablis.
The 2010's sold out in a flash (we do have a few bottles available from our reserve stock for those who act quickly). The top wines in particular are difficult to tell from much more famous names in the Cote d'Or that cost several times as much.
So it is with pleasure that we offer the three top cuvees from 2011 which have recently been bottled and will be in our next container. (The Macon Villages Vieilles Vignes 2011 is already in stock).
If you liked the 2010's I think you will like the 2011's just as much. They too are mineral wines, with lovely freshness and vibrancy. They are very impressive wines that earned Domaine de la Verpaille the New Talent Award from French Guide La Revue du Vin de France last year.

2011 Macon Villages Vieilles Vignes
In Stock $24.00
When they say Vieilles Vignes (old vines) they really mean it! This remarkable wine is produced from 115+ year old Chardonnay vines!
Fresh, bright and fine. Not the broad style of Macon often seen. Fragrant and lively with citric notes. Complexity from the old vines. Somewhat reminiscent of fine Chablis (only half the price). Great drinking and tremendous value.
Pre Arrival Price $23.50
The Viré-Clessé AOC is located in the northern part of the Mâconnais subregion, north of the town of Macon. Only Chardonnay is allowed for white wines.
This wine is from 60 year old vines grown on south-east facing slopes of clay-limestone soil
2011 Vire-Clesse "Longchamp"
Pre Arrival Price $27.00
Longchamp is a plot in Vere-Clesse that is vinified separately. The vines are 66 years old.
Vinified in French oak barrels. Fuller than the village wine, this cuvee shows the benefits of the climat with great mouthfeel finishing with mineral and flint. More complex, spicy and interesting and more in a white Burgundy style. I like this cuvee very much.
2011 Vire-Clesse "Virolis"
Pre Arrival Price $32.00
A very special climat vinified separately with a small amount of new oak.
Vine age for this wine is 70+ years and the minerality in the soil is expressed in the wine. The fruit is powerful enough to swallow up the oak which plays a supporting act. Serious and delicious.
Pre Arrival Price $309.00
Contains 3 bottles of each wine. Great if you want to taste them all or can't make up your mind!
