Bertagna 2015 2016 15% Header
Seriously good Red Burgundies from 2015 and 2016. Built to cellar!

One of the things I love about Burgundy is that nothing stays constant. Domaines rise and fall. However, in recent years more are on the rise than decline as estates gather knowledge from far afield, often by way of their travel-wise children. Quality (and prices) continue to rise but prices still look reasonable when compared to First-Growth Bordeaux.
I have been drinking Burgundy for around 35 years. I have a snapshot in my mind about many producers based on their efforts of 10 or maybe 20 years ago. I am pleased to say I am often wrong. The new generation, or perhaps simply a new winemaker, has breathed life into many a domaine.
Bertagna Perriere Gate I have to say Domaine Bertagna fits into the latter category. We happily added the domaine to our portfolio a couple of years ago. The 2016's have arrived and we now have a selection of wines in stock from the twin vintages 2015 and 2016.
The domaine has a fine portfolio from generic Burgundy, through a clutch of top Premier Crus to five Grand Crus.
Today we present the wines at a 15% discount. Please be mindful that the extreme frost of 2016 has meant quantities of wines are severely reduced.

Don't miss some great wines like the Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2016.

Clos St-Denis Grand Cru 2016
Normal Price $458.95
Special $389.95

Bertagna Denis Label
Bettane and Desseauve:
One of the 10 Best French Wines of the Year!
The most profound Clos St-Denis of our tasting in a vintage particularly favourable to this climat. Very dark fruit, structure, huge power and mouthfeel with a most complex finish. Incredible breed - a lot to experience - an undeniable success in 2016. 19/20

Darren Harris:

Very dense red-purple. An enticing nose of bright, fresh fruit, with much spice and a touch of graphite. The palate is multi-layered with deep fruit flavours and more spicy elements. Intense but not heavy. There is oak but it is coated by such tremendous fruit that the impression is of silkiness. Balanced and precise with a tangy citric note that Bertagna (and indeed most Clos St-Denis) shows every vintage. From 50 year old vines and built to age. My favourite wine at Bertagna (again).

Corton Les Grandes Lolieres Grand Cru 2016
Normal Price $442.95
Special $376.50
9 bottles left

Bertagna Corton Label Darren Harris:
A 0.25 hectare parcel. 100% new oak. Deep purple. Spice, smoke, liquorice, cherry, blueberry and a lot of minerals. Masses of extract. A strong, but not heavy wine, with sinewy and very long tannins. The Corton Les Grandes Lolieres is something of a forgotten gem in the Bertagna portfolio. It has a lot to offer for those willing to forget it in the cellar for a decade. A great followup to the magnificent 2015.

Vougeot 1er Cru Clos de la Perriere Monopole 2016
Normal Price $239.95
Special $206.95
13 bottles left
Bertagna Vougeot Perriere label Darren Harris:
A monopoly of the domaine measuring a substantial 2.2 hectares in size. The vineyard is surrounded on three sides by Musigny, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses and Clos Vougeot. Complex nose displaying wild strawberry, violets and an array of spices and herbs. Multi-layered with an enticing note of musk in the background. Texturally interesting with a long, refined finish displaying minerals and fine grained tannin. This is always one of the most intellectual wines at Bertagna that seems to combine a little of the three serious vineyards that surround it.

Wine Enthusiast - Roger Voss: This vineyard, wholly owned by the producer, lies next to the north end of Clos de Vougeot. Old vines and low yields give the wine a dense texture. The ripe, smoky character is dark, firm and needs several years more aging. Drink from 2024. 93 Points

Vougeot 1er Cru Les Petits Vougeot 2016
Normal Price $239.95
Special $206.95
19 bottles left

Bertagna Petit Vougeot label Darren Harris: Alongside Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses, Bertagna own a sizeable 1.26 chunk of Les Petits Vougeot. Deep red. Nose of red fruits, smoke, minerals with a touch of vanilla spice and liquorice. There is a very appealing roundness to the palate which carries to the long and full finish.

Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2015
Normal Price $229.95
Special $195.50

Bertagna Beaux Monts Label
Darren Harris:
Extremely deep colour. Rich and powerful nose of black cherry, violets, spice and Asian tea. Sleek and rich in the mouth with excellent definition and significant muscle. Complex fruits and spices mingle with florals and dusty new oak (the wine saw 50%). Persistent and long with a mineral-infused spine and fine-grained tannins. This is a serious wine that is built to cellar.

Wine Enthusiast - Roger Voss:
From one of the grandest premiers crus, this wine is dense and rich. With great fruit tones and finely integrated wood, it is complex, beautifully balanced and shows great intensity. The juicy red fruits are shot through by firm tannins that will soften as it matures. Drink from 2025. 94 Points

Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2016
Normal Price $239.95
Special $206.95

Bertagna Beaux Monts Label Darren Harris:
From a 0.92 hectare holding. Deep colour. Spicy Vosne nose with cherries, violets and considerable five spice. Complex and multi-layerd with floral elements alongside the spice. Sleek and concentrated in the mouth with excellent presence. Finishes extremely long with the discreet but present tannins buried beneath the fruit. Very good indeed.

Wine Enthusiast - Roger Voss: From one of the premier cru vineyards that surround the cluster of legendary Grand Crus in Vosne-Romanée, this opulent wine is rich with perfumed red fruits, with hints of wood aging showing in the smoky character. Acidity gives freshness to a wine that needs to age. Drink from 2024. 94 Points

Fine Wine Geek: They own 0.92 hectares (2.27 acres) in this vineyard which is near Echezeaux. Grapes are 70% destemmed. They do a controlled fermentation for at least 3 weeks. This wine is aged in French oak barrels, 50% new, for 15 to 18 months.] More muted nose. Really rich, long, and complex. Great potential. Recently went through malo. So intense and extracted. Needs a lot of time. 10 years, I think. 94-95 Points

Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers 2015
Normal Price $229.95
Special $195.50
14 bottles left
Bertagna Murgers label Wine Enthusiast - Roger Voss
This young, richly structured wine comes from a vineyard to the north of the town of Nuits Saint-Georges. It is powered by spice and toast from wood aging that are balanced by the ripe red-plum fruits and acidity. The combination is going to produced an impressive, foursquare wine as it ages. Drink from 2024. 93 Points

Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers 2016
Normal Price $239.95
Special $206.95
3 bottles left

Bertagna Murgers label Darren Harris:
Bertagna own 1 hectare of the total of 4.89. 30% whole bunch, 50% new oak. Very deep purple. Nose of black cherry, plums and woody spice. Complex and deep with that delightful mix of Nuits and Vosne that Les Murgers typically displays. Powerful, dry and structured.
Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Plantes 2016
Normal Price $239.95
Special $206.95
1 bottle left

Bertagna Chambolle Plantes label Darren Harris: Les Plantes is alongside the 1er Cru Les Charmes. Bertagna have 0.23 ha. 100% destemmed, 50% new oak. Saturated purple in colour. An expansive nose with more width than Les Village. The palate is quite closed with cool red fruits and mineral notes. This needs a bit of time in bottle to blossom but has the makings of a serious Chambolle 1er Cru.

Fine Wine Geek: More open in the nose than the 2012. Complex, expansive in the mouth. Very open and giving now. Will likely shut down. Should be delicious in 4-6 years or so. 92-93 Points
Chambolle-Musigny Le Village 2016
Normal Price $151.95
Special $128.95
19 bottles left

Bertagna Chambolle Village Darren Harris: From a single parcel in the lieu-dit Le Village which adjoins the 1er Crus Les Feusselottes and Les Carrieres. Old vines - 2/3 are 70+ years old. Deep red-purple. Very lifted aromatic nose with spicy red fruit. The palate displays the same character with minerals and spice and a wonderful freshness. Good weight. Finishes long with a little tannin on the end. The old vines ensure that this is always a high class Villages Chambolle.

Haute Cotes de Nuits Dame Huguettes 2015
Normal Price $54.95
Special $46.70
3 bottles left
Bertagna Huguettes label Darren Harris: Located in the commune of Nuits-St-Georges this vineyard has a reputation for high quality Hautes Cotes de Nuits. Medium colour. Intense nose of red fruits with considerable depth and power. Rich and gravelly on the palate. Drinks well above its appellation. Well worth a look as it is priced at below many generic Bourgogne which deliver far less bang for your dollar.

A-F Gris Richebourg
Domaine A-F Gros Richebourg Grand Cru 2010

From a fine private cellar we are pleased to offer 4 bottles of the superb Domaine A-F Gros Richebourg. The bottles come from an original 6-Pack from which the owner has decided to retain two bottles.

All Burgundy lovers will know just how difficult (not to mention expensive) it has become to buy the tete de cuvees on release.

This is an opportunity to secure a highly rated wine from one of Burgundy's best vineyards from the superb 2010 vintage. It is a wine you will be proud to own.

We've checked values internationally and these bottles are very fairly priced.
Burghound: There is enough wood to notice framing the still reticent, fresh and exceptionally cool red and dark berry fruit that exhibits a broad range of spice and floral notes. There is equally good freshness and a wonderful verve to the broad-shouldered, dense and extract-rich flavors where an intense minerality surfaces on the palate staining, focused and linear finish that delivers simply terrific length. This harmonious though notably firm effort offers crystalline purity and should abundantly reward 15 to 20 years of cellar time, perhaps even a bit more. In a word, impressive. 95 Points

Stephen Tanzer: Good bright, full red. Crushed berries, stony minerality and a menthol topnote on the nose. Creamy, sweet and full on entry, then extremely backward in the middle, showing less obvious fruit than the Clos Vougeot but great delicacy of texture for all its volume. The wine's superb, slowly mounting finish, featuring noble tannins, suggests a long and graceful evolution. 95 Points

Jancis Robinson: This has the extra something you look for from grand crus - a matchless level of complexity in the flavour. Very drinkable now. Eloquent. Refreshing, perfumed, sophisticated. 19+/20

$1095.00 a bottle

Chartron Montrachet Large

Domaine Jean Chartron Montrachet Grand Cru 2017
1 bottle available
The top of the tree!
Jasper Morris MW:
Just half a barrel made! Massive fruit on the nose, ripe plums and fresh apricots, but also a saline component. Full of joie de vivre, pretty ripe, almost a viognier touch though the structure is all chardonnay. Very good length, extremely cheerful. Tasted: October 2018. 94-96 Points
John Gilman "View from the Cellar": The 2017 Montrachet from Monsieur Chartron is also quite ripe and shows a touch of
exotica in its aromatic blend of fresh pineapple, pear, apple, chalky soil tones, orange blossoms
and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, ripe and complex, with a plump
core, very good acidity and grip, fine focus and a long, vibrant and classy finish. This is very,
very good juice in the making. 2023-2065. 94 Points

Old French Wine Dinner header

An Old French Wine Dinner. Thursday 19 March 2020 at Ryne
Stunning Old Wines going back to 1927!

It has been quite a while since our last Old Wine Dinner. Late last year in one of our containers we received a lovely shipment of aged bottles from one of our French contacts. Most of the wines were from Burgundy but there were also some scarce bottles from elsewhere in France.

To my delight the bottles fell in to some interesting brackets which we will taste at this dinner. Included is a pair of Beaujolais Crus from 1964 (I have enjoyed quite a few aged Beaujolais and they become surprisingly like the Cote d'Or), Burgundy back to 1934 and a trio of aged Chateauneuf/Cahors, the oldest almost a 100 years of age. It is an increasingly rare opportunity to savour wines of yesteryear.
The wine list:

Delas Freres Hermitage Blanc 1961

Societe D'Interet Collectif Agricole Saint-Didier Saint-Amour 1964
Societe D'Interet Collectif Agricole Saint-Didier Moulin-A-Vent 1964

Marche Aux Vins Beaune 1er Cru 1969
Brossault Chambolle-Musigny 1961
Chevillot Morey-Saint-Denis Morey Les Sorbets 1959

Domaine Du Chateau De Beaune Bouchard Pere & Fils Beaune 1er Cru Les Theurons 1957
Philippe Guillemot Nuits-St-Georges 1937
Philippe Guillemot Savigny-Les-Beaune 1934

Bouchard Pere & Fils Chateauneuf-du-Pape 1957
Jean Pierre Brotte Chateauneuf-du-Pape 1949
Clos De Gamot Cahors 1927

Gilet-Gaillard Vouvray 1953

The dinner will be at Ryne where Donovan Cooke will prepare a matching dinner and the staff are experienced in handing old bottles. There will be 10 seats including myself. As always there is some risk with old bottles but we have enjoyed great success with wines from this source in France.

Date: Thursday 19 March 2020
Time: 7.30 pm
Venue: Ryne, 203 St Georges Rd, Fitzroy North 3065
Cost: $795.00 per person
