Three Vintages of the Domaine des Chezeaux Griotte-Chambertin made by Ponsot

Three Vintages of the Domaine des Chezeaux Griotte-Chambertin made by Ponsot

Three vintages of Domaine des Chezeaux's glorious Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru
Made by Laurent Ponsot
The Mercier family, proprietors of the Domaine des Chezeaux, own an incredible 1.57 hectares of the Grand Cru Griotte-Chambertin. That's around 60% of this vineyard!
For years the vineyard has been managed and the wine made under a metayage arrangement with Domaine Ponsot and then Laurent Ponsot after his departure from the domaine.
The arrangement sees Ponsot keep two-thirds and Domaine des Chezeaux receive one-third of the production. The wines are identical - only the label is different. The Domaine des Chezeaux label acknowledges Ponsot as the maker and the bottles typically have the name PONSOT molded into the base.

One thing that is very different is the price. The Ponsot labeled bottles are far more expensive, something that is hard to fathom.

Today we present three vintages of this serious Grand Cru at discounted prices that makes them even more reasonable.

All are in stock for immediate delivery.

John Gilman "View from the Cellar":
The 2017 Griotte-Chambertin from the Ponsots is excellent and very much cut from the same stylistic cloth as it was back during Laurent's time at the helm of Domaine Ponsot in Morey. The ripe and very expressive nose wafts from the glass in a mix of sappy black cherries, black plums, dark chocolate, chalky soil tones, grilled meats, mustard seed and a bit of beetroot in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, precise and impressively mineral in personality, with a sappy core, ripe tannins and fine balance and grip on the long, tangy and complex finish. A superb Ponsot Griotte! 2027-2075.
95 Points
Jasper Morris MW: Glowing fresh mid purple. Superb grace to the nose, magically juicy, then a firmer backbone behind. Some crunch here, only medium intensity, a wine to judge by its class more than its size. The fruit is ripe but not untidy, more in the fresh little red fruits register. Tasted: November 2018. 93-96 Points

Jasper Morris MW: In Laurent's time at Domaine Ponsot this could be a veritable hit or a slight miss. The 2016 looks like the former. It has a gorgeous purple black centre, then a marvellous richness of red and black fruit through the middle, a very valuable bite of acidity, and all sorts of detailed little red fruits dancing across the palate, offering amazing detail. Very promising! 95-97 Points

John Gilman "View from the Cellar": Very much in its customary style, offering up a ripe and sappy nose of black cherries, plums, chocolate, roasted meats, a fine base of soil, a touch of mustard seed and plenty of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, powerful and opulent in personality, with a sappy core, fine-grained tannins and excellent length and grip on the long, tangy and beautifully balanced finish. A classic Griotte in the making. 2031-2080. 95+ Points
Domaine des Chezeaux (Ponsot) Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru 2014

Special $399.50

Chezeaux Griottes John Gilman "View from the Cellar": The 2014 Griotte-Chambertin from Laurent Ponsot is a stunning wine in the making, soaring from the glass in a very red fruity mélange of cherries, beetroot, a touch of red plum, gentle notes of grilled meat, a superb base of limestone, mustard seed and woodsmoke in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very transparent in personality, with a sappy core of fruit, lovely focus and grip, suave tannins and a very, very long, tangy and impeccably balanced finish. Great Griotte in the making. (Drink between 2025-2075). 95 Points
Wine Advocate - Neal Martin: The 2014 Griotte Chambertin Grand Cru is certainly not as immediate as that temptress, the 2014 Charmes-Chambertin. This insists upon more coaxing from the glass, more swirling to eke out those attractive scents of blackberry, raspberry preserve and rose petals, all very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe, sappy red berry fruit. There is pleasant tang of sour cherry here, even a hint of licorice on the finish that has more density than the Charmes-Chambertin, if not quite the nascent "Charmes." Give it 4-6 years in bottle and then I think you might have a serious Griotte on your hands.93-95 Points

Coche-Dury Perrieres label
Domaine Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2016
2 bottles available

Whilst all Coche-Dury wines are in great demand, it is the domaine's Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrieres that really makes aficionados weak at the knees.
Coche own 0.5 hectares of Perrieres planted in 1950, 1970 and 2005.
We are delighted to have two bottles of this incredible rarity coming from France.
Rarely, if ever, seen in Australia.

William Kelley, Wine Advocate:
The 2016 Meursault 1er Cru Perrières is the most distinctive wine in the range, unfurling in the glass with notes of lemon oil, crushed chalk, tart green apple, dried white flowers and struck flint. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, elegantly satiny and searingly intense, with tangy acids, huge concentration and the pronouncedly mineral, stony signature that always seems to mark out this bottling. Along with Genevrières, Coche's parcel in Perrières was largely spared by the 2016 frosts. Given its utterly classic profile, a dozen years' patience is advised. 97 Points

Burghound: Here too there is plenty of floral influence to the airy but impressively dense aromas of various white orchard fruit, citrus, oyster shell and mineral reduction-suffused nose. Like several wines in the range in 2016, the medium weight plus flavors are not only almost painfully intense but overtly powerful with outstanding minerality that really surfaces on the driving and superbly complex finale. I usually prefer the Corton-Charlemagne in most vintages but 2016 may ultimately prove to be an exception. Either way, both are superb wines and if you can find, and afford, them I unreservedly recommend buying them. (Drink starting 2031). 96 Points

John Gilman, A View from the Cellar: There was not a whole lot of frost damage in Perrières as well in 2016, so this wine chez Coche has also turned out very classical in personality. The bouquet is stunning and still quite youthful, offering up scents of apple, pear, stony minerality, iodine, hazelnuts, orange zest and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full and racy in profile, with a superb core of fruit, brilliant soil signature, snappy acids and a very, long, complex and laser-like finish. Domaine Coche-Dury has made the reference point example of Perrières for as long as I can remember and their 2016 is once again, the stuff of legend! (Drink between 2023-2060). 96+ Points

Lignier Hubert Griotte
The Rare Hubert Lignier (Domaine des Chezeaux) Griottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2014
1 bottle available
Do you know that a smaller portion of Domaine des Chezeaux's Griotte has been made available to Domaine Hubert Lignier?

In 2014 Lignier made two barrels as an experimental cuvee. The first commercial release was the 2015.

We have 1 bottle of the Rare experimental 2014 in stock. Less than 600 bottles were made. This is something special for the cellar!
John Gilman "View from the Cellar": There are two casks of Griotte-Chambertin chez Lignier in 2014, with one of the barrels new and the other a three wine barrel in this vintage. The wine is really very lovely, wafting from the glass in a complex and red fruity blend of raspberries, cherries, coffee, grilled meats, excellent chalky minerality and cedar. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very transparent, with a great core of fruit, ripe, suave tannins and excellent focus and grip on the very long and very classy finish. A fine example of Griotte! (Drink between 2025-2075). 94 Points
