Burgundy is an ever changing region. Over the last decade we have seen a real update in the style of many of the more traditional communes like Aloxe-Corton, Clos Vougeot and Pommard.
Those of you who purchased the Domaine Coste-Caumartin Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Boucherottes Monopole 2016 will know exactly what I mean. Pommard at its best can be enthralling. Out with the old-fashioned, heavy, tannic wines and in with a new finer, more expressive style.
Domaine Christophe Vaudoisey have one Pommard Premier Cru - Les Chanlins. Perhaps not surprisingly it lies right on the Volnay border and as it so often the case the wine share features of both communes.
The Vaudoisey family came to Volnay in 1804. In recent years it is Christophe, the eighth generation, who has taken the domaine to new levels. He took over the domaine from his father in 1985, built a new winery in 2008, and from then on the wines have received many accolades from Guide Hachette and other French publications.
The Volnay Premier Crus from Vaudoisey are extremely popular. But I also think their Pommard 1er Cru Les Chanlins should be accorded the same respect. It is a stylish wine and is also great value.
To tempt you to try the wine we have a special offer for today. We offer this Pommard Premier Cru for just $75.00 and that is excellent buying! The wine is in stock for immediate delivery.

Les Chanlins is on the Volnay border. It is an unusually steep and stony site for Pommard with less clay in the soil. The result is an elegant wine that has more than a little Volnay character.
Darren Harris:Deeply coloured. Blue fruits - currants, plums etc with restrained floral notes and spice. The vineyard's location suggests the wine is something of Pommard/Volnay cross and certainly the palate supports the theory. The wine has more earthy notes and slightly higher tannins but still a high degree of finesse. If you like a little more weigh this wine delivers. Like all Pommard it needs a little time to unwind and then will cellar for many years.
Vaudoisey's Chanlins is like all of their 1er Crus - elegant and stylish rather than heavy and blunt. It captures the stony nature and high altitude of the vineyard and drinks more like a Volnay than the heavy clay-based wines of further down the slope. Try it, I think you will like it!

An Old French Wine Dinner. Thursday 19 March 2020 at Ryne
Stunning Old Wines going back to 1927!
It has been quite a while since our last Old Wine Dinner. Late last year in one of our containers we received a lovely shipment of aged bottles from one of our French contacts. Most of the wines were from Burgundy but there were also some scarce bottles from elsewhere in France.
To my delight the bottles fell in to some interesting brackets which we will taste at this dinner. Included is a pair of Beaujolais Crus from 1964 (I have enjoyed quite a few aged Beaujolais and they become surprisingly like the Cote d'Or), Burgundy back to 1934 and a trio of aged Chateauneuf/Cahors, the oldest almost a 100 years of age. It is an increasingly rare opportunity to savour wines of yesteryear.
Chevillot Morey-Saint-Denis Morey Les Sorbets 1959
Domaine Du Chateau De Beaune Bouchard Pere & Fils Beaune 1er Cru Les Theurons 1957
Philippe Guillemot Nuits-St-Georges 1937
Philippe Guillemot Savigny-Les-Beaune 1934
Bouchard Pere & Fils Chateauneuf-du-Pape 1957
Jean Pierre Brotte Chateauneuf-du-Pape 1949
Clos De Gamot Cahors 1927
Gilet-Gaillard Vouvray 1953
The dinner will be at Ryne where Donovan Cooke will prepare a matching dinner and the staff are experienced in handing old bottles. There will be 10 seats including myself. As always there is some risk with old bottles but we have enjoyed great success with wines from this source in France.

Time: 7.30 pm
Venue: Ryne, 203 St Georges Rd, Fitzroy North 3065
Cost: $795.00 per person
