Great 2017 Nuits-St-Georges from Domaine Robert Chevillon

Great 2017 Nuits-St-Georges from Domaine Robert Chevillon

CHevillon Robert 2017 header
Brilliant Nuits-St-Georges from a superb maker

The stunning collection of premier cru and old-vine vineyards held by the two Chevillon brothers would make any Pinot Noir grower jealous. Their innate ability to carefully tend the vines and master the difficult Burgundian conditions provides ripe, healthy clusters of grapes year after year. Taste through the barrels of Chevillon post-harvest and it doesn't matter what happened the year before, almost as if by miracle, the wines show class and character and each terroir has its distinct idiosyncrasies. It is le vrai Pinot chez Chevillon.

Brothers Bertrand and Denis Chevillon are the fifth generation managers of this property in Nuits-Saint-Georges.  Their father Robert, for whom the domaine is named, is still active as well.  Both brothers bring passion, experience, a tireless work ethic, and intensity to their work at the domaine.

It is fair to say that Domaine Robert Chevillon is the most famous address in Nuits-St-Georges.The reviews of the 2017's are stunning. Make no mistake - this is a great vintage for the domaine!
Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots 2017
Normally $249.95
Special $187.50

Robert Chevillon Chaignots
John Gilman, View from the Cellar: The Chaignots is always the most extroverted premier cru in the Chevillon cellars and the style of the 2017 vintage dovetails perfectly with this cru. The bouquet is deep, pure and sappy, jumping from the glass in a fine blend of black cherries, plums, dark chocolate, a touch of pigeon, a lovely base of soil, vanillin oak and a floral topnote redolent of violets. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, very refined and sappy, with lovely soil undertow, fine-grained tannins and a very, very long, very precise and absolutely seductive finish. This is one of the best recent vintages for the Chevillon Chaignots that I can recall! (Drink between 2023-2060). 92+ Points

Burghound: The proximity to the southern side of Vosne is in evidence as here the expressive nose of pure red and dark berry scents cut with warm earth is quite spicy. In the same fashion as the nose, there is a lovely texture to the lightly mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors that evidence both fine depth and length. I like the balance and there is enough stuffing that this could be approached early but it should also have no trouble amply repay mid-term cellaring. (Drink starting 2025)  90-92 Points

Wine Advocate, William Kelley: The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots is superb, bursting with expressive aromas of cherries, violets, bergamot and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and supple with a layered core that entirely cloaks its fine structuring tannins in succulent fruit. This is an elegant, open-knit Chaignots which will offer a broad drinking window. 90-93 Points
Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Roncieres 2017
Normally $249.95
Special $187.50
Chevillon Robert Roncieres label
Decanter: This premier cru's position on the south side of Nuits, just below Les Perrières, means that it has a high limestone content and it shows in the freshness of the resulting wine. It's bright, perfumed and focussed, with stylish 30% new wood integration, plenty of structure and depth and a poised finish. (Drink between 2024-2030). 95 Points

Wine Advocate, William Kelley: I have a weakness for the 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Roncières, an inviting wine that bursts with aromas of blackberries, cassis, sweet soil tones and spices. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy with an ample core of succulent fruit, rich structuring tannins and a long, vibrant finish. This will offer a broad drinking window. 92-94 Points

John Gilman, View from the Cellar: In recent times I have been starting to come around to the conclusion that the Roncières is the most underrated premier cru in the stellar lineup from Domaine Chevillon, as this wine ages beautifully each and every year and turns into one of the most elegant examples of Nuits St. Georges to be found in all the Côte d'Or. The 2017 Roncières is indeed exceptional, and this too may be one of the very finest recent vintages of this bottling, as it offers up a stunning aromatic constellation of red plums, cherries, raw cocoa, chalky soil tones, gamebird, vanillin oak and a nice touch of rose petal in the upper register. On the palate the wine is very pure, very refined and full-bodied, with the vintage's telltale sappiness on the display in the mid-palate, great focus and grip, suave tannins and a very, very long, complex and utterly refined finish. Do not overlook the 2017 Roncières chez Chevillon, as this wine is great! (Drink between 2026-2065). 93+ Points
Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers 2017
Normally $249.95
Special $187.50
Robert Chevillon Pruliers
Decanter: One of an impressive array of premiers crus from the south side of Nuits, the Chevillons' parcel in Pruliers extends to 0.6ha and is 55 years old. It's a wine of considerable freshness, detail and precision, showing floral aromas, some sweet spices, succulent red berry fruit and a focussed, chalky finish.Drinking Window 2023 - 2028. 95 Points

Wine Advocate, William Kelley: A virile wine built for the cellar, the 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers unfurls in the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, cassis, peonies, orange rind and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, richly tannic and muscular, with a deep core of concentrated fruit, tangy acids and a long, fine-grained but firm finish. It will demand and reward patience. 92-94+ Points

John Gilman, View from the Cellar: The 2017 Pruliers may be the only wine in the Chevillon cellars this year that is not a quintessential expression of its terroir, but I mean this in a good way, as this is normally the most black fruity premier cru in the lineup, but this year it is bursting with atypical red fruity charm and sappiness! The bouquet is beautiful and very, very polite for young Pruliers, wafting from the glass in a refined blend of red and black cherries, red plums, raw cocoa, gamebird, dark soil tones, nutskin and a beautifully-measured base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and properly structured, with a superb core of fruit, lovely transparency, beautiful focus and grip and a very long, complex and ripely tannic finish. Another superb wine in the making. (Drink between 2027-2065). 93+ Points
Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains 2017
Normally $339.95
Special $254.95
Chevillon Robert Vaucrains label
John Gilman, View from the Cellar: The 2017 Domaine Chevillon Vaucrains is deep, pure and supremely elegant out of the blocks this year, with the nose offering up a gorgeous aromatic blend of black cherries, pomegranate, dark chocolate, gamebird, woodsmoke, complex soil tones, a hint of nutskin and a bit of cedary new oak. On the palate the wine is very pure, full-bodied and the most reserved wine in the cellars today, with a rock solid core of fruit, exceptional transparency, ripe, perfectly integrated tannins and superb focus and grip on the very, very long and promising finish. The wine turns nicely sappy on the backend and shows off some of its future greatness. (Drink between 2030-2075). 96 Points

Decanter: Les Vaucrains is marked by its proximity to the combe at the southern end of Nuits-St-Georges, which gives the wine an added lift of freshness. Like Les St-Georges which abuts it, this is quite a firm, shuttered wine with an overlay of 30% new wood, good concentration, fine tannins and enough backbone and acidity to age. Drinking Window 2025 - 2030. 95 Points

Wine Advocate, William Kelley: As usual, the 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains is the most structured, tight-knit wine in the Chevillon cellar, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, dark chocolate and rich soil, framed by smoky new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, richly tannic and concentrated, with imposingly broad shouldered structure and a deep, reserved core. Again, patience will be required and rewarded. 93-95 Points

Vinous,  Neal MartinThe 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru has a little more precision than the Les Saint-Georges on the nose: the terroir more articulated, greater energy conveyed by the aromatics. The pure, precise palate is beautifully balanced with filigreed tannin and an effervescent and very sustained finish that is pure class. This could well be the standout from Chevillon this year. A wine from the top drawer.

Chevillon-Chezeaux Les St Georges
chevillon-chezeaux
Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux
A wonderful range of Nuits-St-Georges
Domaine Chevillon-Chezeaux was created in 1887 by Eugène-François Chevillon, who inherited from his father Symphorien Chevillon some parcels of vines. He was succeeded by Eugene Chevillon and then in 1946 by his two sons, Georges and Maurice. In 1947, Domaine Georges Chevillon grew with the acquisition of Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru "Les St-Georges". In 2000, their granddaughter Claire and her husband Philippe Chezeaux her husband renamed the domaine Chevillon-Chezaux. The husband and wife are well connected. Claire is a cousin of the owners of Domaine Robert Chevillon and Philippe is the brother of Jerome from Domaine Jerome Chezeaux, who is also in our portfolio.

The domaine currently owns 8.61 hectares spead over 14 different appellations. The highlight being a fine selection Nuits-St-Georges 1er Crus including Les St-Georges.

Buffet 2017 Dinner header
Domaine Francois Buffet 2017 Dinner at Oriental Tea House. Thursday 12 March 2020
4 seats left
Menu now available

Nine Premier Crus and more from the 2017 vintage!

Domaine Francois Buffet has certainly attracted the attention of our Burgundy clients. The first vintage we imported was 2016 and the wines proved tremendously popular - no doubt a combination of their inherent quality and seriously good prices.

Our 2017's are just about to arrive and I think it would be opportune to present the full range at a dinner. In 2017 we have not only the complete set of six 1er Cru Volnay but also the domaine's three 1er Cru Pommard.

There are not a lot of addresses that offer that selection. For those of you undecided about the 2017 vintage I urge you to come along. I have been drinking quite a few 2017's and I can tell you they are lovely. The style of the vintage will suit Buffet to a tee.

For those of you unfamiliar with the domaine it has a very long history with its origins dating back to 1692! The domaine and its 8 hectares of vines is run by Marc-Olivier Buffet, the eighth generation.

This dinner will be in the private room at Oriental Tea House in South Yarra. Click here to see the room.
