A couple of weeks ago a small group sat down to dinner and compared the 2017's and 2016's from Domaine Coste Caumartin. The top wines were all tasted blind in pairs.

Well, what an interesting exercise it was. You would think that it would be easy to tell the difference between the two vintages but that did not prove to always be the case.

With the domaine's top wine, Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Boucherottes Monopole, everyone had the 2017 and 2016 back to front. It just goes to show what a fine vineyard it is. And how the 2017 vintage has produced some sensational wines.

It was in 2018 that I visited Domaine Coste-Caumartin for the first time. I was blown away by the quality and style of the wines. This was Pommard at a level I had not seen before. Reviews from Gilbert and Gaillard soon followed confirming my impression. The wines sold exceptionally well.

The domaine's finest vineyard is their monopole Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Boucherottes. It has been in the family since 1908. The vineyard has always been a jewel of the village and 500 years ago it was part of the Royal Domain. This vineyard lies on the Beaune border and is largely surrounded by Pommard 1er Cru Les Petits Epenots to the south and Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches to the north. It is, in effect, a clos of Petits Epenots.

The 2016 was, and remains, tremendously popular. It is the only wine we have ever ordered from the domaine three times. We purchased every bottle we could get our hands on. I can tell you quite honestly that the 2017 is every bit as good and it you don't have some in your cellar you need to grab some bottles before it sells out.

Today we offer both the 2017 and 2016 at a 25% discount. Both are magnificent and exceptional value at just $128.50 a bottle.

Coste-Caumartin Boucherottes label Gilbert and Gaillard: Clear garnet color. Nose a little closed, floral sensation, fruity (cherry), undergrowth... Elegance, purity, silky in the mouth despite an aromatic contribution still reserved. High potential assets. It would be a pity to succumb too quickly to its charms. 94 Points

Darren Harris: Clos de la Boucherottes lies on the Beaune border and is largely surrounded by Pommard 1er Cru Les Petits Epenots to the south and Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches to the north. It is, in effect, a clos of Petits Epenots. This Monopole has been in the family since 1908. Many of you purchased the outstanding 2016 and I am delighted to say that the 2017 is cut from the same cloth. The most aromatic nose of the Pommards. Very floral with cherry, marzipan and violets. The palate is intense and mouthfilling with layers of juicy fruit and a mineral cut. The mouthfeel is one feature of this vineyard that few Pommard can match. There is a velvet texture from old vines and low cropping. The tannins are there but are so well coated by the fruit so their influence is really just a support act. Another exceptional Clos de la Boucherottes and highly recommended.

Coste-Caumartin Boucherottes label Gilbert and Gaillard: A garnet color with ruby highlights. Racy nose, floral presence with greedy Morello cherry. The palate seduces by its scale, its elegance, its fullness. One praises to the skies for its fruit, its floral dimension, its generous tannic finish. A 2016 with an entire character.

Darren Harris:
Deep purple-red. Intense nose of cool black fruits - mostly cherries - and huge minerality. Refined and cool. Tight, very tight. The super low cropping adds layer upon layer on a textured palate culminating in an amazing peacock's tail and a very long stony finish. The silky tannins are extremely fine and coated by the velvety fruit. The domaine sets out to make this wine as a Grand Cru with extremely low cropping and beautiful handling. They succeed admirably. I don't think I have ever tasted a Pommard quite like this. It reminds me of a theoretical blend of Corton Clos du Roi, Clos Vougeot and Clos de la Roche with each coming to the fore as the wine sits in the glass. It is a sensual wine and is very special indeed. Forget your pre-conceived idea of Pommard. This is a super wine of Grand Cru quality.

Vaudoisey Chanlins label

Domaine Christophe Vaudoisey Pommard 1er Cru Les Chanlins 2017
A serious bargain!
Domaine Christophe Vaudoisey have one Pommard Premier Cru - Les Chanlins. Perhaps not surprisingly it lies right on the Volnay border and as it so often the case the wine share features of both communes.
The Vaudoisey family came to Volnay in 1804. In recent years it is Christophe, the eighth generation, who has taken the domaine to new levels. He took over the domaine from his father in 1985, built a new winery in 2008, and from then on the wines have received many accolades from Guide Hachette and other French publications.
Darren Harris: Deeply coloured. Blue fruits - currants, plums etc with restrained floral notes and spice. The vineyard's location suggests the wine is something of Pommard/Volnay cross and certainly the palate supports the theory. The wine has more earthy notes and slightly higher tannins but still a high degree of finesse. If you like a little more weigh this wine delivers. Like all Pommard it needs a little time to unwind and then will cellar for many years.
This wine is a steal!
