Chronologically Domaine de la Solitude is one of the oldest estates in the entire Rhône region. By any other standard it's one of the most youthful. The tipping point took place a few years ago when young Florent Lançon stepped into the position of winemaker for the family estate. It's been lights out ever since, thanks to a string of mid-ninety point scores from the industry's top wine scribes and even more gratifying, high acclamation from a discerning peer group.

The domaine owns 35 hectares of vines in Chateauneuf du Pape. 30 hectares are devoted to the production of red wine and 5 hectares are used for growing grapes used to make their white Chateauneuf du Pape wine.

The vines are planted in a terroir of sand, loam, clay and rocky soils. Domaine de la Solitude has old vines. In fact, their oldest parcel of Grenache vines are more than 100 years old.

In 1985, Domaine de la Solitude made changes in their approach to wine making. They replaced their old foudres with concrete vats and stainless steel tanks. In 1996, they renovated their winemaking facilities again and began experimenting with using some new, French oak barrels as well for the aging process. In 1999, Domaine de la Solitude expanded their output, launching new labels. Cuvee Barberini made its debut in 1999 and the Reserve Secret was launched with the 2000 vintage.

Today we present the domaine's three top red cuvees from the 2017 vintage. Instead of the usual 15% Pre Arrival Discount we have increased that to 25% - but only for paid orders received this week.

Solitude Barberini Label The wine was first made in the 1999 vintage. The name of the wine is a tribute to the original founders of the estate, the Barberini family. The wine comes from a terroir of rock and stone soils.

Josh Raynalds, Vinous: (60% demi-muids and _barriques and 40% concrete) Brilliant violet color. Powerful cherry liqueur and dark berry aromas are complicated by smoky mineral, incense and lavender flourishes and a hint of exotic spices develops with air. Juicy and concentrated on the palate, offering sappy blackberry, cherry compote and floral pastille flavors and a late touch of allspice. The impressively long, chewy finish features resonating floral and cherry notes and dusty tannins that emerge slowly and steadily. Drink  2026 - 2036. 93 Points

Solitude Cornelia Constanza Label First produced in 2005 this cuvee is 100% old vine Grenache. The vines are in a terroir of 100% sandy soil in the La Crau vineyard.
The vines used for this wine are all more than 80 years of age. For the aging of the wine, 30% of the wine is aged in new, French oak barrels and the remainder is aged in vat and foudre for about 15 months.

Josh Raynalds, Vinous:  Deep shimmering crimson. Expansive, mineral- and spice-accented red berry liqueur, cherry cola and incense scents show outstanding definition and spicy lift. Palate-staining Chambord, cherry-vanilla, spicecake and floral pastille flavors slowly deepen on the back half while maintaining urgency. Manages to come off graceful for its heft and richness, and betrays no rough edges. Finishes smooth, floral and extremely long, with rounded tannins and lingering red fruit liqueur and exotic spice notes. 60% concrete tanks and 40% foudres. Drink 2025 - 2035. 95 Points

Solitude Secrete Label The wine made its debut with the 2000 vintage. The terroir is pure sandy soil with vines planted in the La Crau and Blachières lieux-dits.
Josh Raynalds, Vinous: (60% new and 40% used barriques) Limpid ruby. Displays highly aromatic scents of ripe black and blue fruits, Moroccan spices and garrigue, along with subtle olive and mocha qualities. Plush, smooth and animated on the palate, offering densely packed, spice-tinged blackberry, cherry liqueur, candied licorice and bitter chocolate flavors that are complemented by sweet oak tones. Impressively powerful yet lithe, finishing with steadily building tannins, superb length and an echo of lavender pastille. Drink 2027 - 2037. 95 Points

Les Clos du Caillou
Chateauneuf-du-Pape and outstanding Cotes du Rhone
Le Clos du Caillou, a 53 hectare wine estate with Côtes-du-Rhône and Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellations, is located in Courthézon in the South of France.
The property has only 9 ha of AOC Chateauneuf-du-Pape, of which 1 ha is planted with white varieties. The domain makes extremely good Cotes du Rhone from 44 ha of Cotes-du-Rhone. The Cotes du Rhone Bouquet des Garrigues comes from fields just outside the border of AOC Chateauneuf-du- Pape. The story goes that in the 1930's, the owner, armed with a hunting rifle, refused to receive experts seeking to delimit the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. Thus, Clos du Caillou remains a kind of enclave, with many of the very old vines classified as Cotes-du-Rhone, rather than Chateauneuf-du-Pape, as they would have been!

The vineyards are rich in traditional red varieties as Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah and traditional white varieties as Grenache, Roussane, Clairette. These grapes varieties are cultivated on excellent terroir: there is both sandy soil, pebbles and large stones in the different vineyards.
