Today we are delighted to offer a fine range of 2014 Barbaresco Riservas from Produttori del Barabaresco.

2014 is regarded as an excellent Barbaresco vintage producing wines that are classic in style, with beautiful structure and outstanding varietal character
Antonio Galloni said "Piedmont fans will want to be on the lookout for the 2014 Riservas from Produttori del Barbaresco when they are released later this year. I can't think of too many wines that offer this level of quality for what remain incredibly fair prices." "Rain in Barbaresco turned out to be a third of what fell in nearby Barolo. Hail damaged vineyards in Barolo three times that year, but miraculously skipped Barbaresco entirely. Warm days and cool, clear nights - ideal conditions for Nebbiolo - set in during September, leading to gradual ripening under the shorter days of fall. Cool, long, late-ripening seasons are considered ideal for the development of aromatics, color and fully ripe tannins, all signatures of the 2014 Barbarescos."

White pepper, bright red cherry, floral notes and mint cut through the fruit in this beautifully vivid, crystalline Barbaresco. There is a level of energy, drive and overall nuance in the 2014 I don't recall having seen in the past. The 2014 is a terrific Muncagota. (Drink between 2022-2039).

Wine Advocate: The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is beautifully polished and bright, with dark berry fruit, ripe cherry, crushed stone and pressed flowers. The wine is compact and firm, and you feel the tannins and power in the mouth. The Muncagota remains slightly more closed in terms of the bouquet, but this will open up with some time. 94 Points

Antonio Galloni, Vinous:  One of the many highlights in this range, the Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is superb. A big enrobing wine, the Montestefano wraps around the palate with stunning depth. Today, the Montestefano is utterly embryonic, and yet it exudes depth, resonance and pure class. The Montestefano is one of the more complete wines in the range because of the way it deftly balances fruit intensity and structure. Readers will have to be patient, though. (Drink between 2022-2044).

 Pure cherry flavors permeate the rich flesh of this red, backed by vibrant acidity and fine tannins. Eucalyptus, earth and tar elements add depth as this cruises to a lingering finish. Fine intensity. Best from 2021 through 2040. 94 Points

Antonio Galloni, Vinous: The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is a dark, sensual beauty. Deeply spiced and balsamic, with tremendous textural richness, the Pora is utterly beguiling. I can't remember a Pora with this much depth, textural resonance and brooding intensity. The 2014 needs at least a few years to be at its best, but it is superb even in the early going. I won't be surprised if the 2014 turns out to be better than this note suggests. (Drink between 2024-2044). 94 Points

Wine Advocate - Monica LarnerI had tasted this vintage last year as a barrel sample. Now a fully complete wine, the 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Pora did not disappoint, and even jumped up a few points. The Riserva Pora opens to dark fruit intensity with a slightly more accessible quality. Those lovely floral tones of lavender and violet are ever present. After having spent three years in oak and another year in the bottle, this wine offers a looser mouthfeel in terms of tannic structure, making it a bit more open and immediate in personality. You could uncork this bottle in 2020 if you just can't wait, but ideally, it is meant for the longer haul. 94 Points

The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is another of the more inward, reticent wines in the range. A core of huge dark fruit virtually covers the beams of incisive tannin that are such a signature of this Barbaresco site. Dark red plum, chalk, cured meats, plum, iron, smoke, leather and licorice confer attractive elements of savoriness to this potent, structured Barbaresco. (Drink between 2022-2044).

Wine Advocate - Monica Larner: The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico shows a darkly concentrated appearance and full-bodied appeal that is immediately obvious to all the senses, from eyes to nose to mouth. The wine is soft, round and thickly textured. I would have expected more acidity in these wines, but this vintage, at least, offers more sweet and dense fruit instead. You could taste it in its youth with a goose-liver pâté, or cellar it for a couple of years and see where it goes. 94 Points

The Rabajà is dark and potent - as all these wines are - but the tannins and acids give the wine considerable tension and energy. The Rabajà is a powerful, towering wine endowed with massive structure and intensity to burn. Like so many of these wines, the Rabajà is somber and brooding in feel. (Drink between 2024-2044)

Black truffle and dried fruit converge on the bouquet to add to the intensity. You really appreciate the freshness and sheer power of this succulent, well-structured and medium to full-bodied Barbaresco. This one's the real deal. 96 Points

Wine Spectator - Bruce Sanderson: The 2011 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is a bit darker and more ample than it usually is, a signature of the year. With time in the glass, the typical soaring floral/spiced Rio Sordo bouquet emerges. Dark, sensual and beautifully expressive, the Rio Sordo is another wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring. 94 Points

Produttori Barbaresco Asili label 2 Antonio Galloni, Vinous: The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is somber and dense in this vintage. Silky Asili tannins bring out the wine's voluptuousness and soft contours. Dark red cherry and plum fruit show some of the typical Asili sensuality, but the 2014 is a powerhouse that is going to need time to come around. In 2014, Asili is unusually - almost uncharacteristically - austere. (Drink between 2022-2044). 95+ Points

Wine Advocate - Monica Larner: The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is a beautifully complete expression that shows precise and incisive aromatic intensity, followed by firm structure and impressive length. There is a brief interlude of mineral dustiness on the mid-palate that passes briefly to reveal more ripe cherry fruit on the close. I'm not sure what the total acidity is, but this expression gives the impression of being slightly less fresh than some of the other single-vineyard wines in this series of Riservas.

Produttori Paje Label Antonio Galloni, Vinous: Beams of minerality and salinity cut through a core of dense, dark fruit in the 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Pajè. Deeply pitched and tannic, the 2014 is a super-classic, youthfully austere Barbaresco that is going to need time to be at its best. Readers should expect a firm, structured Barbaresco. The finish alone is striking. Crushed rocks, minerals, sage and lavender add nuance to this chiseled, finely sculpted Barbaresco. We get quite a few requests for events featuring wines with some bottle age. So we've decided to raid the cellar and assemble a dinner featuring several vertical brackets. 
Domaine Castagnier is one of our most popular producers and we have a good selection of wines in our museum holdings.
Jerome Castagnier was originally a professional trumpet player with the Guard Republicain, the national band of France, Jerome took over the family domaine just over a decade ago. Armed with a raft of great vineyards he has turned Domaine Castagnier into a rising star. 
A few years ago he was awarded Young Winemaker of the Year. Always smiling and with a super sense of humour, Jerome found this quite amusing as he felt he was a little too old to be Young Winemaker. Never-the-less it further confirmed his status in Burgundy.
We have a nice reserve of back vintages and I thought it would be opportune to present a selection of wines from Bourgogne to Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru. 
So we will start with Jerome's Puligny-Montrachet blanc then move to a pair of the delicious Bourgogne followed by a brace of Jerome's Gevrey-Chambertin Villages. 
Then we will taste two brackets of Premier Cru Reds. The first bracket features three consecutive vintages of Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru Aux Cheseaux. As with Echezeaux in Flagey the origin of this vineyard name is from the ancient word for buildings. The vineyard lies right on the Gevrey border and part adjoins the Grand Cru Mazoyeres-Chambertin. It is a small vineyard of 1.49 hectares. It is not well known but it is a seriously good vineyard.
The second Premier Cru bracket is Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers. This is one of Gevrey's best Premier Crus. It is located in the Combe de Lavaux alongside Clos St-Jacques. It is steep, stony and exposed due east. The resulting wines are elegant, precise and complex. Once again we have three consecutive vintages.
And to finish a trio of Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, a favourite of Jancis Robinson produced from a small parcel of very old vines.
The dinner provides an unique opportunity to taste the same wine from multiple vintages. 
The dinner will be at Ocha in Hawthorn.
