Les Malconsorts is an exceptional Premier Cru. Being located alongside La Tache and less than 400 metres from Romanee-Conti it comes as no surprise. Domaine du Clos Frantin own a substantial 1.76 ha holding with a vine age of around 40 years. Jasper Morris MW says "Aux Malconsorts was first taken out of scrubland and planted with vines in 1610, relatively late for this part of the Cote. Nonetheless it is an exceptional vineyard, one of my three favourite premier crus along with Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses and Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St-Jacques."
It is one of our best selling wines every year.

Bichot has owned the plot of Aux Malconsorts since 1964, when they acquired the Grivelet estate including vineyards and the Clos Frantin chai and mansion in Vosne-Romanee.

Vinous Media - Neal Martin:
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru comes from Bichot's substantial 1.75-hectare holding, handpicked on September 11 and made with 40% whole bunch and 45% new oak. This has a high-class bouquet of pure red cherries, cranberry and wild strawberry scents, hints of rose petal and orange blossom emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp red berry fruit and a frame of quite firm tannins that should guarantee the longevity of this Malconsorts. It feels a little aloof on the finish, but it just needs time to soften its edges. 92-94 Points

James Suckling: Beautiful crushed roses with an array of fresh raspberries and red cherries, as well as light mocha and oak spices in the background. The palate has excellent tannin maturity and depth. A bold, explosive finish. This is exceptional. This elegant vintage has delivered a wine with real clarity and detail. But still needs some time. Try from 2024. 94-95 Points

Jasper Morris MW: Significantly rich deep purple. A wonderful richness of flavour sweeps across the palate. It is still held in check a bit by the wood. A solid, rich, firm wine at the finish, with impressive density. 94 Points

Tim Atkin MW: The Bichot holdings run to 1.75 hectares and cover both the upper and lower parts of the Premier Cru. This is a sturdy, almost austere expression of the site with serious tannins, dense, chewy black fruits and a touch of mint. Very well made, but needs considerable time in bottle. 2028-38. 94 Points
Burghound: (from a whopping 1.75 ha parcel). A relatively deeply pitched nose offers plenty of both floral and spice elements along with notes of plum, dark cherry and a touch of Asian-style tea. As is usually the case there is excellent volume and a taut muscularity to the sappy broad-shouldered flavors that flash superb depth and persistence. Note well though that this classic example is definitely built-to-age and is going to need at least most of a decade to be approachable. Recommended. SWEET SPOT WINE 2031+. 92-94 Points

James Suckling: A fragrant and complex Vosne-Romanée with deep black-cherry and floral notes on the nose. Then comes the rich and very elegant palate, the tannins almost completely masked by the fruit, until you reach the very powerful yet polished finish.
94 Points

Jasper Morris MW: Dense purple colour, the nose is much stricter than the Amoureuses but just as tense. If anything there is greater concentration here but the wine is shaped differently, with a firmer stricter structure at the back, through the fruit flows over the tannins. There is just enough acidity. 93 Points

The World of Fine Wine: A perfumed nose, floral and charming. Fresh limpid, and elegant on the palate, with fine-grained tannins and good underlying tannins. It's not that demonstrative but it's finely balanced and long. 93 Points
Bill Nanson, The Burgundy Report: 1.75 ha from 6 sandier parts and lower down heavier soil - the bottom left which is more sandy and the rest which is more clay - there can be 3 days difference in maturity between these two sectors - 'clearly different wines too, the lower part more massive less complex.' The only area in 2017 where they did a green harvest.
Hmm - not a big nose today, but one with a lot of inviting, faintly spiced complexity - true to its roots. Fuller, more depth, more complexity - certainly more structural vs the Amoureuses, but also much more complex - accessibly complex - today. Super finishing depth of flavour. Ooh that's good! - Excellent wine.

Bichot Amoureuses Label
Albert Bichot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses

Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses is one of Burgundy's most desirable wines. Despite being a Premier Cru its magnificent aroma and complex, silky palate make it a wine of reverence.
Les Amoureuses produces magnificent, aromatic, complex and supple wines that outperform many Grand Crus. Accordingly, it is priced like a Grand Cru. The vineyard is 5.4 hectares in size and there are not a lot of producers. Clive Coates states "This is a vineyard which, like Clos St Jacques in Gevrey-Chambertin, is regarded by most - and priced accordingly - as the equal of a grand cru.... I regularly prefer it to Bonnes-Mares. But Bonnes-Mares it is not. Les Amoureuses is really a sort of younger brother to Musigny itself: perfumed, silky-smooth, intense and soft rather than brutal and muscular, and with real finesse".
Bichot typically make just a single barrel (280-300 bottles) of this wine so it is certainly on the Rare list in any vintage!
The vineyard belongs to Alain Serveau, Bichot's head winemaker (shown at left with Alberic Bichot to the right). The Bichot team led by Serveau, won Red Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge 2017.

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate:
The 2015 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Amoureuses, which contains 20-25% whole bunch fruit, has a surprisingly understated bouquet when considering both the precocity of the vintage and the esteemed vineyard in question. It gently unfurls with red cherries, strawberry preserve, crushed rose petals and wet stone. This is very classy and dare I say, I might mistake it for say one of Christophe Roumier's wines. The palate is very refined with crisp acidity, shimmering red cherry and strawberry fruit, superb mineralité and great tension on the finish. Do not underestimate this Amoureuses, because I suspect it will have a long and prosperous future. 94-96 Points
Tim Atkin MW: The Bichot Les Amoureuses is often the best négociant bottling from this famous Premier Cru and that's certainly the case in 2015. It's a pale, refined, feline Pinot Noir with classis rose petal and peony notes, a core of red fruit sweetness and silky, palate-caressing tannins. 2020-28.  96 Points

Decanter Magazine:
Alain Serveau, Bichot's long-term winemaker, owns this parcel (lucky man) and sells the grapes to his employer, so it's almost a domaine wine. It's comparatively powerful for Les Amoureuses, with a touch of subtle reduction in barrel. Sappy, grippy and well-defined, it displays rose petal and potpourri scents, spicy berry fruit flavours, and a long, harmonious finish. (Drink between 2024-2030). 95 Points

Jasper Morris MW:  Lovely rich purple and the nose is sumptuous too, absolutely doing what Amoureuses should. There is a fine silky texture, all the red fruits together, just ripe enough, and with all the hoped for succulence and superb length. 94 Points

Vinous Media - Neal Martin:
The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru includes 40% whole-bunch fruit and matured in the same percentage of new oak. It has a lovely, very pure and charming bouquet with copious red cherries, crushed strawberry and pressed rose petal aromas, veins of blue fruit emerging with aeration. The palate is candied and forward on the entry. It does not deliver the depth and precision of this premier cru's finest exponents, although there is a sensuality that is irresistible. Drink over the next two decades. 91-93 Points
